Job Description
Job Duties:
1. Successful rotation in all sections of clinical laboratory (25% effort)
MUSC Clinical laboratories consist of the following divisions: Clinical Chemistry Special Chemistry and Immunology Hematology and Coagulation Molecular Pathology and Microbiology. In the first year of training the fellow rotates on these services along with pathology residents. During each rotation the fellow attends small group didactic sessions lab bench rotations and completes all tasks assigned by attending(s) as pertinent to each rotation.
2. Clinical service including Chem Lab pager coverage. The fellow will work closely with the lab director to generate and provide timely and appropriate clinical consults (25% effort)
3. Finally the fellow is expected to successfully complete at least one independent research project. (25% effort)
4. Administrative tasks. The fellow will participate in periodic quality control reviews quality improvement projects and be expected to learn all the basic aspects of laboratory management. (15% effort)
This program trains the fellows for a leadership role in laboratory medicine specifically to serve as medical laboratory directors. An important component of the job is to ensure the high quality of laboratory processes analytics and ultimately patient laboratory results. The fellow participates in review of laboratory quality control data and works closely with medical laboratory director and management staff to understand quality operational and regulatory aspects of clinical lab management.
5. Teaching. The fellow is expected to teach both medical technologists and pathology residents. (10% effort)
Requirements:
All applicants should have earned a doctoral degree (PhD and/or MD DO) from an accredited university. Individuals with doctoral degrees in Chemistry-related fields or Medicine are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates should have successfully completed 30 semester hours of undergraduate and/or graduate level biochemistry or chemistry courses. Applicants with education obtained at institutions outside the U.S. or Canada must at their expense have their credentials evaluated by the International Education Research Foundation Inc. or acceptable equivalent. Applicants should have strong interests in laboratory medicine and research. Excellent communication and personal-interaction skills are required.
Stipends:
Salary and benefits equivalent to those provided to at least a first-year resident in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at MUSC.
