Position Summary:
Augustana University invites applications for the role of American Sign Language (ASL) Lab Mentor. This hands-on student-facing position plays a vital role in enhancing the ASL and Interpreting programs through immersive language practice cultural mentorship and instructional support. The ideal candidate will foster an inclusive professional and culturally aware learning environment that prioritizes student growth and fluency. This is a part-time position.
Key Responsibilities:
Tutor ASL students in one-on-one or small-group settings using immersion-based strategies.
Guide students on coursework and skill development based on instructor direction or student-identified challenges.
Support faculty in creating ASL video materials as needed.
Mentor students on cultural and social conventions of the contemporary Deaf community.
Provide online and videophone support for ASL and Interpreting students.
Assist students with lab technology and equipment.
Maintain ASL Lab materials supplies and cleanliness.
Track and document student attendance and material completion.
Ensure sanitary conditions and daily upkeep of the lab.
Provide instruction on proper lab procedures and video methods.
Submit timely and accurate timecard documentation.
Communicate regularly with the designated lab liaison to coordinate schedules.
Complete required training both in-person and online.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED is required.
American Sign Language fluency as determined by Augustana University ASL and Interpreting Faculty.
Minimum two years of experience working with students or mentees in an educational or mentorship setting involving activity design direct instruction skill assessment and feedback.
Must be 21 years of age or older.
Interacting with students faculty and leadership from diverse backgrounds and perspectivesand demonstrating a deep appreciation for academic values and culturemust be a core value of the successful candidate.
