Idaho Power located in Twin Falls Idaho is looking for a Meter Technician Apprentice to join our Customer Operations team. Its an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. Our work plays a critical role in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon and were working hard to safely provide our customers with the safe reliable affordable energy they depend on.

What does a Meter Technician Apprentice do for us

Under the direct guidance of journey-level Meter Technicians this individual will develop and learn to:

  • Complete required apprenticeship training until the requirements of the program are satisfied and becomes certified by the Bureau of Office of Apprenticeship (OA).
  • Install test and maintain all types of revenue metering applications.
  • Connect and disconnect all self-contained transformer-rated and primary meters and services.
  • As needed perform collection activities.
  • Energize transformers and services.
  • Commission maintain and repair automated metering infrastructure (AMI) communications and metering equipment in the field and substations.
  • Serve as a revenue metering expert through oversight of meter quality compliance data and technology.
  • Troubleshoot and correct metering errors ensures follow-up on corrections for billing failure reporting revenue protection reporting and process re-engineering to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Use metering-related software applications and electrical drawings.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • Electrical and electronic theory and application including AC three phase
  • Quality management system requirements
  • Basic computer network/PC applications (e-mail network files online forms shared files and meter related software and applications)

Preferred:

  • AC three-phase applications such as motors distribution systems transformer configurations/connections
  • Underground and overhead customer service requirements state and local electrical inspection requirements collection and arrangement procedures
  • Idaho Power safety program

Skills in:

  • Oral and written communication
  • Basic practical application of algebra and trigonometry
  • Understanding of application and operation of electronic test equipment including measurement of voltage amperage and power

Preferred:

  • Prior application of electrical and electronic test equipment in troubleshooting AC and DC systems

Ability to:

  • Be self-motivated
  • Work independently or work with others in a team environment
  • Use safety and personal protective equipment properly
  • Organize and prioritize work
  • Manage projects
  • Operate technical test equipment
  • Troubleshoot electrical problems and keep detailed records
  • Operate small power and hand tools
  • Perform work from ladders poles and aerial lift devices
  • Perform vehicle inspections and maintain safe clean orderly mechanically maintained company vehicles

Preferred:

  • Operate ATVs/UTVs snowmobiles and aerial devices
  • Provide electrical/technical training one-on-one


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED

Preferred:

  • Completion of an Associates degree in Electronics

Experience:

  • 2 years of experience applying electrical and/or electronic theory on the job performing installation/maintenance and testing of electromechanical or electronic devices including one of the following:
  • 1 year of operating electrical and electronic test equipment

OR

  • Completion of an Associates degree in Electronics

OR

  • An equivalent combination of appropriate education and experience that provides the desired knowledge skills and abilities

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
  • Valid DOT Medical Card or ability to obtain prior to hire


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Job requires the person to occasionally bend stoop and squat crouch climb into and out of vehicles ascend/descend ladders twist kneel balance and reach. Occasionally lift shoulder height and above waist high and knee-high items weighing up to 60 lbs. rarely up to 75 lbs. Frequently use exertional force greater than 50 lbs.; occasionally carry items with one or two hands weighing up to 60 lbs. Must be able to operate vehicle foot and hand controls. Frequently grasp items such as hand and power tools test equipment ladders etc.; use fine hand manipulation frequently while using small hand tools computer keyboard etc. Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat of harm to self others or property. To ensure the manufacturers rated capacity of climbing hooks ladders and aerial equipment are not exceeded applicant body weight cannot exceed 300 lbs. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Additional job- and safety-related training may be required at times off site. Must achieve satisfactory completion of all required training as identified. Ability to physically perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat of harm to self others or property.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Meter Technician Apprentices will be required to satisfy the requirements of the apprenticeship-training program and become certified within 54 months of the job selection. May be required to work in an on-call rotation and work overtime when needed including in response to emergencies outside of normal working hours. Employees must live within the 30-mile drive distance boundaries on the appropriate operations center map with the expectation that under normal driving conditions they will respond to their home operations center in 45 minutes or less if required to stand on call. Work outside in adverse weather conditions. Drive and maintain a company vehicle in accordance with Company policy. Travel around service area and overnight on occasion. Must wear company provided and approved fire-resistant (FR) clothing and safety footwear.
