Idaho Power headquartered in vibrant Boise Idaho is looking for an Electrical Engineer to join our System Protection team. Its an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. What does a System Protection Engineer do for us

A system protection engineer will model and analyze power systems during steady state transient and fault conditions for planning specification and configuration of power system equipment for transmission and generation including protection control voltage control transformation and reactive compensation.

They also:

  • Planandleadprojectsassignmentsandtechnicalinvestigations
  • Actasaliaisonbetweenotherdepartmentsandorganizations
  • Evaluateprogressandresultsrecommendingchangesinprocedures
  • Exercisemoderatetechnicaljudgmentindecision-makingandindependentaction
  • Are responsibleforbudgetingfinancialaccountabilityandtimelinesonassignedprojects
  • Utilize industry and discipline related knowledge to interpret and comply with regulations as required by NERC FERC WECC EPA NESC OSHA FCC etc.
  • Design electric power system distribution transmission generation instrumentation protection and controls communication systems EMS/SCADA cable management and metering systems.
  • Review operations reports and determines whether protection system operations were proper
  • Troubleshoot and make corrections to protection systems and remedial action schemes
  • Specify design and configure protection systems and remedial action schemes
  • Perform fault study analysis of the power system including modeling the power system elements
  • Commission protection systems and remedial action schemes


Engineer I:

Operating under general supervision and with oversight an Engineer I is developing technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads assignments and projects may interface with internal departments and external organizations and receives guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.

Engineer II:
Operating under limited supervision an Engineer II has an intermediate level of technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads moderately complex assignments and projects interfaces with internal departments and external organizations and receives high-level guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.

Senior Engineer:

Operating under minimal supervision and using independent initiative Senior Engineers have comprehensive technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads complex assignments and projects interfaces with internal departments and external organizations and mentors other engineers and engineering support staff as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution

OR

  • Bachelor in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited institution and a P.E. license

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution

Experience:

  • Engineer I 0-2 years related experience
  • Engineer II 2 or more years of related experience
  • Senior Engineer 6 years of related engineering experience OR 5 years of related engineering experience plus PE or advanced engineering degree and 3 years in the area of expertise

Preferred:

  • Engineer I/II Engineer in Training (EIT) designation
  • Senior Engineer 3 years in the area of expertise and/or Professional Engineer (PE)

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Travel with out-of-town stays may be required
  • Senior Engineer: For internal candidates must have 6 months or greater at Engineer II level Step 13

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position is a sedentary job requiring working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment fine motor skills including typing on the computer dialing phones filing paper and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. Ergonomic accommodations including sit to stand desks are available and installed as needed.
