SCHOOL NURSE
10-month Full-Time Position
General Statement of Job
The school nurses responsibilities include the evaluation planning and protection of the health of students and school personnel in accordance with state law and district policies and regulations utilizing the current Standard of School Nurse Practice. School nurses are an integral part of access to education and work to reduce and eliminate health-related barriers to the education process for students. They promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and coordinate communication with families appropriate school staff and the medical home and private healthcare provider.
Required education and experience
- Must hold current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in NC.
- Bachelors degree in Nursing (or attain within 3 years of employment).
- Must hold National Certification in School Nursing (or attain National Certification within 3 years of employment)
- Experience in nursing preferably in pediatrics and/or public health nursing.
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Individual health care needs assessment for students.
- Health care plan development revision and evaluation including Emergency Action Plans. Individual Health Care Plans and health-related components of Individual Education Programs.
- Direct provision of nursing health care services.
- School staff instruction and supervision in provision of care for students with special health care needs.
- Instruction and oversight for medication administration processes in schools.
- Provides emergency and injury care planning and training.
- Communicable disease control and outbreak response in schools.
- Assessment of school community health and safety issues.
- Student screening for conditions that impact access to education such as vision screening.
- Member and resource for student assistance teams that develop health-related accommodations.
- Health-related community resource liaison for schools.
- Provides staff training annually and as needed.
Additional duties
- Will float between schools where needed.
- Other responsibilities assigned by the Executive Director of EC/Student Services.
Essential knowledge and abilities
- Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment.
- Considerable knowledge of child growth and development and the ability to identify abnormal growth and development symptoms.
- Ability to respond appropriately to crisis situations.
- Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment.
- Working knowledge of federal state and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
- Ability to develop and maintain health records on students and to maintain confidentiality of information.
- Ability to develop a positive working relationship.
- Requires the ability to record and deliver information to explain procedures to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical legal and counseling terminology.
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers copiers calculators pencils scissors etc.
- Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently; 20 pounds of force occasionally; and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects.
