This posting reflects an opening for a Diagnostic Medical Physicist I and we are seeking candidates for that position. Provides diagnostic medical physics services to support the objectives of the Medical Health Physics Department.

Job Duties:

  • Meets and maintains the ACR and Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) requirements for being listed as a qualified medical physicist.
  • Performs and documents accreditation requirements of the qualified medical physicist for advanced modalities.
  • Performs and documents mammography equipment evaluations (MEE) as needed (* may require off-hours or off-shift work to ensure machine availability).
  • Performs and documents CT protocol reviews and recommends improvements for dosimetry or image quality.
  • Supports inspections/audits from regulatory/recommending bodies including TJC PA DEP FDA ACR and DOH.
  • Supports/oversees use of advanced medical imaging software including but not limited to patient dose tracking systems scanner performance and distribution systems and remote system access.
  • Performs and documents MRI safety reviews/audits and assists with system MRI safety initiatives.
  • Assists with planning organizing and directing a comprehensive program of radiological physics and radiation protection services designed to promote maximum benefit from the use of medical and research-related ionizing radiation sources while minimizing radiation risk to employees visitors patients and to the surrounding community.
  • Assists with the development implementation and responsibility for medical and health physics activities in clinical areas to ensure employee patient and visitor safety and compliance with regulations and standards of best practice.
  • Performs personal patient and area dose assessments.
  • Performs audits of program areas as assigned evaluates radiological hazards and consults with authorized users on risk management issues.
  • Assists with coordination of radiological equipment usage selection and replacement as required as well as providing recommendations on new equipment layout facility design shielding specifications (and verifications) and installation requirements.
  • Aids in optimizing image quality dose and interpretation (e.g. technique development/changes) troubleshooting imaging problems evaluating equipment performance and recommending methods to support excellence in patient imaging.
  • Evaluates performance specifications acceptance testing and commissioning of new radiological equipment.
  • Position requires travel to various Geisinger locations (some of which are located in state and out of state e.g. mammography workstations). Coordination with IT individual Radiologists and management to inspect/correct issues related to off-site equipment will be expected within a one-month window.

Position Details:

Diagnostic Medical Physicist I:Novice level experience. Competent in routine radiation safety and accreditation requirements. Working knowledge of technical standards scope of practice department and health system policies safety and service standards. Working knowledge of departmental functions routine medical physics duties and familiarity with regulatory requirements.

Certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Diagnostic Medical Physics or Certification by the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) in Diagnostic Imaging Physics or meets the American College of Radiology (ACR) and United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) definition of a qualified medical physicist (QMP). Certification status will be evaluated annually (if lapsed a period of 2 years will be allotted to maintain/retain certification status).

Education:

Masters Degree- (Required) Masters Degree-Medical Physics (Preferred)

Experience:

Minimum of 1 year-Related work experience (Preferred)
