RN SANE 1 (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) - Toledo Hospital - Forensic Program - Per Diem - Variable

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Reports to forensic coordinator. This nurse leads the SANE team members in the care as directed by the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) program medical director and in collaboration with attending providers and other healthcare providers in accordance with the philosophy of ProMedica Acute Care Hospitals.

POSITION SUMMARY

The SANE Registered Nurse provides timely accurate collection of forensic evidence in sexual assault cases. This includes sexual assault/abuse collection kits for male and female patients. The SANE nurse actively participates in the creation of an environment that fosters patient family physician and employee satisfaction. The SANE nurse provides nursing care to individuals and groups who require specialized knowledge judgment and skills derived from the principles of biological physical behavioral social spiritual/cultural and nursing sciences. The SANE Registered Nurse functions within the full scope of nursing practices as noted by the Board of Nursing of their designated state for which they are practicing in addition to compliance with any of the hospitals accrediting bodies.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. SANE Specific Responsibilities

a. Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively with local Rape Crisis personnel law enforcement agencies social work and emergency department personnel.

b. Performs forensic examinations and collection of evidence in accordance with state and professional organization guidelines.

c. Demonstrates competence in the use of additional evidence collection tools such as colposcope Bluemaxx light toluidine blue and photo documentation.

d. Completes SANE documentation to include consents discharge instructions assessment and interventions.

e. Initiates appropriate referrals for follow up after care as needed.

f. Performs quality assurance functions and other duties as assigned by the program coordinator.

d. Addresses patient family education needs considering patient level of comprehension style of learning from the point of entry through discharge.

e. Navigates and collaborates with patient family and healthcare team regarding the care provided and needed to ensure appropriate transition along the continuum.

f. Evaluates patients response and interventions to ensure optimal patient care.

3. Evidence-Based Practice

a. Integrate best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient/family preferences and values for delivery of optimal health care.

b. Base individualized care plan on patient values clinical expertise and evidence.

4. Nursing Practice

a. Assesses formulates nursing diagnosis plans and implements and continually evaluates effectiveness of the individualized written nursing care plan and delivery of nursing care for each patient assigned.

b. Analyzes and prioritizes problems and makes sound judgments based on logic and/or critical thinking skills.

5. Safety and Quality Improvement

a. Improve the safety and quality of healthcare systems by minimizing the risk of harm to patients and the healthcare team.

b. Administers medications and executes regimens as authorized by the state licensure.

c. Incorporates quality measures and data to understand individual and system performance.

d. Applies use of technology and standardized practices that support safety and quality.

e. Identifies strategies to reduce risk of harm to self or others.

f. Participates in unit-based quality improvement evidence-based practice projects or research.

g. Promotes and incorporates error prevention techniques.

h. Report safety concerns and events including near misses.

6. Informatics & Technology

a. Promote and incorporate use of technology to communicate manage information mitigate errors and support decision-making.

b. Navigates plans patient care and documents ongoing status interventions patient responses and outcomes in accurate timely manner in the electronic health record.

c. Responds appropriately to clinical decision-making supports and alerts.

d. Advocates protecting the integrity of the healthcare record and the privacy of each patient.

7. Communication Teamwork & Collaboration

a. Interacts effectively with patient families and with healthcare team to foster open communication mutual respect and shared decision-making.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Associate degree in Nursing

Skills: Completion and passage of an Adult/Adolescent/Pediatric Sexual Assault Training Program.

Years of Experience: Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience.

License: Current state license as a Registered Nurse.

The RN in Ohio must complete 24 hours of continuing education during his/her licensure period. At least 1-hour of contact hours must be related to Chapter 4723 of the Ohio nurse practice code and rules.

Maintains knowledge and training regarding legislation and evidence collection by achieving a minimum of 4-hours of SANE specific continuing education annually.

Attends regional/departmental meetings and education events as scheduled.

Participates in SANE on-Call schedule with adherence to business unit guidelines.

Certification: Current BLS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: BSN

Skills: SANE program training

Years of Experience: 3 years of nursing experience.

License: Michigan RN license

Certification: SANE-A &/or SANE-P

WORKING CONDITIONS

Personal Protective Equipment: Demonstrates knowledge and use of standard precautions & PPE2.

Physical Demands: Must be able to tolerate exposure to dust fumes chemicals temperature changes and exposure to blood-borne pathogens and bodily fluids. Must be able to attain all health requirements as identified by the organization (i.e. PPD respirator training vaccines as appropriate). Must be able to move about the hospital and between workstations; and tolerate prolonged periods of standing. Must be able to frequently move lift or carry light to heavy patients or equipment. Must be able to lift medium materials non-material handling; walking bending stooping and reaching; frequent pushing pulling and/or squatting. Must be able to travel to other selected facilities.
