Job Description
Wesleyan University ITALIAN:
Open rank with preference for associate or full Professor Italian Studies. Faculty ready to stand for tenure are also eligible. Open field of specialization.
The Romance Languages & Literatures Department at Wesleyan University invites applications for a tenure-eligible Associate Professor or Full Professor at Rank beginning July 1 2026. Assistant professors will be considered but the successful candidate will be prepared to stand for tenure shortly after hiring. ABDs will not be considered. The research specialization is open. Successful candidates will have a body of scholarship that will intersect in fruitful and demonstrable ways with Wesleyan curricular initiatives including but not limited to transnational Italian Studies ecocritical perspectives science in society digital humanities medical humanities Mediterranean studies queer studies disability studies translation studies and medieval and Renaissance studies. Administrative experience corresponding to rank is expected.
The teaching load is two courses per semester and includes Italian-language and culture courses at all levels of the curriculum and may include an Italian Studies course in English and/or an advanced seminar typically in the candidates area of specialization; advising of honors theses or capstone projects as need arises. Successful candidates will welcome devising and teaching transhistorical courses that contribute to the Italian Sections commitment to instruction across a broad spectrum of historical periods and cultural forms. The successful candidate will have native or near-native fluency in Italian.
Successful candidates will have a strong and demonstrated commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education and to strategies of inclusive teaching. We especially encourage applications from candidates pursuing opportunities to create belonging within the field of Italian studies and who desire to collaborate in nurturing an already vibrant undergraduate program.
Minimum requirement: Ph.D. in Italian Studies or a related field.
All applicants should supply a cover letter that includes a description of current trends and new directions for Italian Studies and how an undergraduate program in North America can contribute to them curriculum vitae the email addresses of three references from whom we will obtain confidential letters of recommendation statement of teaching philosophy and the syllabi for two potential undergraduate courses via (insert link for application). Please note the course syllabi should be designed for Wesleyan undergraduates one to be conducted through the medium of Italian for Majors and non-Majors; the other in English. One syllabus may reflect the applicants research field but at least one syllabus should be thematic and transhistorical. Semi-finalists who will be asked to supply writing samples and teaching evaluations in advance of Zoom interviews. Finalists will be invited to campus and may be asked to submit supplementary teaching materials in advance of their visit when it is anticipated they will also teach a class session of a scheduled course.
