Job Description

Program Summary

In partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health through the Behavioral Health Bridge Housing (BHBH) Program St. Joseph Center (SJC) will provide interim housing opportunities designed to meet the immediate needs of individuals experiencing homelessness who are living with behavioral health conditions and/or substance use disorders. The BHBH Program offers a safe private and secure environment where participants are empowered to stabilize build self-sufficiency and transition from homelessness to permanent housing.

Under the supervision of the Operations Manager the Day Porter is responsible for providing general maintenance support for BHBH Interim Housing sites and performing the duties outlined below.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Complete general building upkeep projects and perform routine interior and exterior cleaning to ensure a safe and well-maintained facility.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Manager and program staff to identify and address maintenance needs across interim housing sites.

Essential Duties:

  • Perform daily cleaning of high-traffic areas including lobbies bathrooms showers hallways sleeping areas kitchens dining areas and offices.
  • Refill soap toilet paper paper towels and other hygiene supplies as needed.
  • Ensure trash and recycling bins are emptied and sanitized regularly.
  • Sweep mop vacuum and disinfect floors and surfaces using approved cleaning products.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of exterior walkways parking areas and entry points.
  • Respond promptly to spills accidents or sanitation-related emergencies.
  • Provide minor plumbing repairs as needed.
  • Support daily disinfection protocols especially in high-contact areas (doorknobs railings etc.).
  • Perform regular hosing or power washing of designated worksite areas to maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards.
  • Assist in unloading supplies deliveries and donations.
  • Assist with cleaning client rooms as needed including when rooms are vacated or require additional sanitation.
  • Complete supply errands as requested to support daily shelter operations.
  • Safely handle and store cleaning supplies and equipment according to OSHA and agency standards.
  • Report maintenance issues hazards or supply shortages to the Shelter Manager or Operations Manager.
  • Maintain respectful professional conduct when interacting with residents and staff.
  • Support the organizations mission by promoting a clean and dignified environment for all clients.
  • Conduct business according to employee handbook exercising judgement and serving the best interest of the agency and community.

Qualifications :

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

Required

  • Must be highly motivated and possess the ability to communicate with and relate to a diverse group of people including clients community and staff. 
  • Prior janitorial custodial or porter experience.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. bend stoop and perform physical labor for extended periods.
  • Basic understanding of cleaning chemicals and safe handling procedures.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Willingness to work in an environment serving individuals experiencing homelessness including those with mental health and substance use disorders.

Preferred

  • Knowledge and use of power tools and hand tools; along with basic knowledge of plumbing carpentry painting and other building maintenance tasks.
  • 1 years of experience in a janitorial custodial or porter position.

Experience:

  • Two years building maintenance experience. 

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent as well as work experience related to this position.

Direct Reports:

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. 

Computer Skills:

  • Basic computer skills required including the ability to check email complete electronic logs and use inventory or maintenance tracking systems.
  • Ability to use widely supported internet browsers.
  • Comfortable using desktops or laptop computers or tablets.

Certificates Licenses and Registrations:

  • None required

Travel Requirements:

  • May require some travel between SJC sites

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand sit walk stoop talk hear reach above and below shoulders; use hand and finger dexterity keyboarding and making and receiving telephone calls. The employee may be required on occasion to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.
