Job Description

Associated Students UCLA as a responsive student-centered organization provides innovative and excellent services programs products and facilities for the entire UCLA community. ASUCLA was created when the campus first opened in 1919. Even in the very early years ASUCLA meant student government student publications and student services such as a bookstore and cafeteria. Today ASUCLA has evolved into a four-part organization. These four entities collectively make up the largest student association in the country. The four entities are:
  • Undergraduate Students Association elected representatives of the undergraduate student body.
  • Graduate Students Association elected representatives of the graduate student body.
  • Student Media this includes the Daily Bruin the Bruin Life Yearbook and seven different magazines.
  • Services & Enterprises this division is designed to meet the everyday needs of students and the campus community. Major divisions are the Student Union Event Services UCLA Restaurants UCLA Store UCLA Photography and Trademarks & Licensing.

Goals of Associated Students UCLA:
Products -To provide essential and convenient items that are easily accessible of high quality and low cost including but not limited to academic support food trademark merchandise and convenience products. In addition to continue evaluating the utility and convenience of all products to make improvements that will best serve the UCLA community.

Facilities -To provide a welcoming environment that contains as much space as possible for the optimal functioning of general academic support student governments student organizations and social gatherings. To have state-of-the-art venues for programming and efficient aesthetic and multi-functional commercial outlets.

Programs -To provide and support a diversified array of programming by prioritizing student-run student-initiated student-centered programming that reflects the needs of the campus community in order to enhance educational cultural and developmental social interaction.

Services -To provide an outstanding level of support to student government student groups and student programs through the state-of-the-art office and community spaces and by providing adequate financial resources and personnel to ensure an active and vibrant campus life.
General Merchandise Customer Service/Floor Manager
Starting Hourly Range: $49875- 57000
Department: Student Union
Summary of Key Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the General Merchandise Buyer and Hilltop Shop Manager the Customer Service/Floor Manager monitors all aspects of merchandising floor maintenance student schedule and training and back-of-house logistics for non-imprinted merchandise. Assists in achieving sales gross margin and contribution budgets by offering and maintaining optimum merchandise assortments and utilizing proper merchandising presentation and promotions for BookZone Essentials Fast Track and Hill Top Shop areas. Works to maintain merchandising strategies including markups markdowns inventory and shrinkage. Able to provide flexible scheduling depending on workflow. Hires trains schedules evaluates and counsels student staff in all activities. Assists Hill Top Shop Manager and General Merchandise Buyer/Manager with overseeing day-to-day operations and financial performance invoice reconciliation customer service cash/security control and interim management responsibilities as needed.
Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for overseeing the visual presentation and maintenance of the Bookzone Essentials Fast Track and Makeup & Lifestyle sections in Ackerman.
  • Ensures the proper stock levels and optimal merchandise mix for the Hilltop Shop retail operation.
  • Handles the day-to-day customer service interactions and provides supplemental training to student staff to ensure they are well-equipped to assist customers effectively.
  • Screens applications for part-time student positions conducts interviews and makes hiring decisions based on the departments needs. Also responsible for scheduling and training floor staff as well as collaborating with other departments to fill staffing gaps when necessary.
  • Evaluates the performance of student staff and provide constructive feedback to management offering insights on individual development.
  • Coordinates aspects of special author events including stock management staffing requirements and logistical support. Provides support to roughly 100 unique author signing events throughout the year.
  • Works with libraries and other departments on campus to fulfill special order requests. Organizes the logistical support necessary for delivering orders around the campus.
  • Provides valuable input and expertise on new and reordered merchandise in various general merchandise categories such as vinyl records imported skincare brands and new fitness clothing brands. The insight into what is trendy and relevant to the campus demographic is essential in this role and the store as a whole.
  • Evaluate the sales floor to identify areas for improvement and suggest changes to optimize the customer experience and increase sales.
  • Regularly required to work flexible hours based on the needs and demands of the store operation and special events.
  • Capable of acting as a proxy for their manager in case of emergencies during vacations or other instances when their manager is unavailable.
  • Store events. traffic and MOD responsibilities may impact schedule.
Qualifications:
Requires 2 years of related management experience preferably retail. Experience must demonstrate: effective sales and customer service skills; effective supervision of a large staff; budget preparation/monitoring prioritization of multiple tasks and effective interface with diverse groups. Requires PC word processing/spreadsheet/database and retail systems proficiency. BA/BS required or the equivalent combination of education and experience. This position is included in the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) PULL NOTICE SYSTEM. ASUCLA will receive notices of any convictions for moving vehicle violations both on and off the job. Employment is contingent on the maintenance of a valid CA drivers license and good driving record as defined by the DMV and ASUCLA.
Supervises:
Directly and indirectly supervises part-time/student employees.
Physical Requirements:
Frequent walking standing sitting reaching bending stooping pushing pulling and lifting up to 50 lbs.
Background Verification:
Fingerprinting Background Verification is required.
