Job Description

The City of Pentictons Water Treatment Plant is in search of a highly motivated and energetic individual for the full-time permanent position of Water Treatment Plant Operator III.

The Water Treatment Plant is part of the City of Penticton Utilities Department which keeps our community safe by providing clean safe drinking water a reliable sanitary sewer system and storm water drainage to help prevent flooding. The Department consists of the Water Treatment Plant Utilities Distribution & Collections Branch and Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Under the general direction of the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor the Water Treatment Plant Operator III performs highly-skilled operational and maintenance work of a complex nature under the supervision of the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor or Water Treatment Foreman. Work involves making operational decisions and performing operational and maintenance duties in order to maintain water quality that meets or exceeds all compliance criteria outlined in the Citys Permit and Provincial and/or Canadian Drinking Water Legislation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supports the overall operation of the Water Treatment and Water Supply System.
  • Monitors the water treatment and distribution SCADA system through observation of gauges meters and control panels to establish accurate system demand requirements and makes adjustments in plant production rates accordingly maintaining control of flow chemical feed rates processing of water residuals and finished water effluent.
  • Visually inspects plant and all equipment daily to ensure proper function trouble shoots sophisticated control systems and takes corrective action when required.
  • Investigates system alarms on callouts as required and makes repairs or adjustments.
  • Compiles data prepares electronic reports and completes logs detailing plant operation ensuring accurate completion of operational maintenance lab and other records necessary to ensure all approval and minimum plant process requirements are met.
  • Performs sampling and laboratory tests of plant treatment processes to ensure compliance to standards and initiates adjustments to plant operations in response to test results.
  • Monitors equipment operation and makes repairs. Reports major equipment problems to the appropriate person as required.
  • Assists external and internal trades with water treatment plant and pump station equipment maintenance as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of Senior Secondary School and completion of a 2 year diploma in Water Engineering Technology (or an equivalent level of education and experience as approved by Manager of Utilities).
  • Completion of Level III EOCP Water Treatment certificate.
  • Three to five years previous relevant experience in water supply and treatment field.
  • Valid BC Drivers Licence minimum Class 5.
  • Proficient in the use of computers including spreadsheet database and word processing applications.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of British Columbia regulations operating permits and City policies.
  • Ability to at times be on standby and work after hours/on weekends.
