Ottawa University (established in 1865) one of the oldest private liberal arts universities in the United States is a multi-campus system serving approximately 4000 students through its campuses in Kansas (Ottawa Kansas- Residential Campus and Overland Park Kansas- Adult Programs); Arizona (Surprise Residential Campus and OUAZ Adult Programs); Wisconsin (Brookfield Adult Programs); and our OU ONLINE PROGRAM based out of Overland Park Kansas.

Ottawa University Kansas Campus (OUKS) invites candidates for a full-time 9-month Visiting Computer Science Faculty Position. The successful candidate will develop and teach a broad range of courses and laboratories at the undergraduate level in the Computer Science program. Additional responsibilities may include teaching management information systems and engineering courses. Responsible for providing engaging and effective instruction as well as academic mentoring for undergraduates; developing assessing and assuring excellent pedagogy and curriculum design both within the discipline and in contributions to the Liberal Arts core program; promoting student achievement and academic integrity on behalf of the University; collaboration with support services provided through units such as the Adawe Academic Advising Center; Academic program development for currency growth recruitment and retention.

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for providing a high quality and engaging instruction and academic mentoring to students; for developing assessing and assuring excellent pedagogy and curriculum design both within the discipline and in contributions to the Liberal Arts core program; for promoting student achievement and academic integrity on behalf of the University; and for collaboration with support services provided through units such as the Adawe Center and for collaboration with support services provided through campus units. Academic program development for program currency growth retention and recruitment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (provide list of items which are essential to effective outcomes in this role):

  • Teaching Load: 8 courses per year (with the potential addition of two directed studies or small courses*). Teach a combination of courses in the discipline (both for students majoring in the discipline and for students meeting Breadth Area (general education) requirements) interdisciplinary and/or team-taught courses and courses approved as part of the Liberal Arts core program. This combination of courses is to be determined in collaboration among the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences Department Chairs and individual faculty according to unit and university requirements.
  • Teaching Standards: Maintain a high standard in classroom teaching through engaging and effective pedagogy exhibiting awareness and understanding of best practices in post secondary education through application in the classroom and remaining current with issues curriculum and classroom approaches in both the liberal arts and the candidates academic discipline.
  • Advising: Attend to student needs and concerns and work with each students advising team members to identify and develop opportunities for each individual learner. Collaborate as needed in scheduling courses addressing academic concerns and supporting efforts in retention.
  • Scholarship: Maintain awareness of contemporary trends and evolving knowledge within ones academic discipline and in the liberal arts through research creative work writing conference attendance (either virtually or at designated location) public presentations (in-person and virtually) and other involvement in the regional and national community of higher education professionals
  • Service:
    -Participate with faculty in governance issues related to curriculum and course development and revisions including review of adjunct syllabi as assigned. Collaborate as needed in scheduling courses and addressing academic concerns (such as but not limited to serving on an academic grievance committee)
    -Contribute to the residential needs and student life at OU by voluntarily serving as advisor to student organizations regularly attending Campus events (EX: Spirit Life activities) serving on student grievance (or development) committees and providing other engaged support to the Campus environment and life as directed by the Dean.
    -Contribute to recruitment and retention efforts for campus growth and sustainability
    -Participate in the interviewing process orientation mentoring and development of new faculty as needed.
    -Participate in Campus and University-wide governance in responding to and engaging in dialogue related to academic issues across the university.
    -Participate in Campus and University-wide committee work including on-going committees program assessments task-oriented committees or task forces and other projects or committees as requested
  • Assessment: Maintain effective curricula through participation in university-wide assessment processes.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION: (education based on essential job duties and requirements consistent with business necessity): Earned Doctorate preferred. Masters Degree required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: (experience based on requirements in role and are consistent with business necessity)
Three years higher education experience preferably in a residential campus liberal arts setting

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: List required and/or preferred certification industry specific requirements required or preferred use of equipment and all necessary job skills abilities and knowledge competencies) Provide a list of items below:

  • Ability to work collaboratively with fellow university faculty as well as departments who support student life and academic achievement.
  • Proven ability to teach effectively in a post secondary classroom;
  • Ability to be flexible in adjusting to and responding to both student and local university needs and concerns; and
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS (Physical attributes required to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation - examples: sitting lifting # bending driving environmental factors or elements noise level stairs in a building or other factors that will affect working conditions). Provide a list of items below:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting must be able to lift 5-15 pounds at times. May require use of building stairs. May require evening and/or weekend work. Position sits and works in front of a computer screen and/or assists students.
