Advisor & Student Support Specialist (SSP III)

Under general direction the Advisor & Student Support Specialist provides holistic trauma-informed advising and support for Promise Scholars and Project Rebound students including students who have experienced foster care students experiencing homelessness system impacted and formerly incarcerated individuals. This position addresses a range of academic personal and transitional needs while promoting equity and student success. The Specialist coordinates workshops events orientation academic success interventions and referrals to campus and community resources. They collaborate across departments to support student engagement maintain case documentation using EAB Navigate Maxient and PeopleSoft and may assist with admissions and departmental recruitment efforts. The incumbent may support other areas such as the Educational Opportunity Program or Warrior Re-Engagement Center based on department needs. This role may also serve as a lead or working supervisor for support staff or interns. If the incumbent holds an MSW they may supervise MSW interns offering mentorship in line with professional standards.

• Provide holistic trauma-informed and culturally responsive advising to students in the program using advanced counseling techniques and a deep understanding of educational and systemic challenges.
• Provide individualized non-clinical case management to students in the program addressing academic personal and transitional challenges through care plans and referrals to appropriate resources.
• Deliver comprehensive academic advising including course planning goal setting and interpretation of university policies and procedures.
• Support students in identifying and addressing complex issues related to educational goals personal circumstances and systemic barriers.
• Utilize advanced interpersonal skills to engage students experiencing crisis distress or resistance; apply de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed practices.
• Exercise professional judgment in resolving student concerns interpreting institutional policies and making independent service decisions.
• Advocate for student needs and elevate systemic concerns to program leadership and campus partners.
• Track academic progress and engagement through data systems progress reports and outreach; initiate timely interventions to support retention and success.
• Design integrated support strategies that draw from multiple university departments and student services.
• Coordinate and implement student-centered initiatives such as workshops outreach events and milestone celebrations (e.g. orientation graduation) that foster engagement and belonging.
• Develop and deliver educational sessions focused on student success academic skills and university navigation.
• Provide lead supervision and mentorship to student assistants ensuring role clarity accountability and professional growth.
• Maintain and enhance systems for tracking participation academic progress and resource utilization for program evaluation and compliance.
• Recommend improvements to program policies procedures and practices based on data trends student feedback and institutional goals.
• Develop creative approaches to address student needs in rapidly changing or precedent lacking situations.
• Represent the program in campus-wide discussions and planning efforts to align student support services with broader university priorities.
• Design and implement tools to evaluate the effectiveness of student services events and program initiatives.
• Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses to identify trends barriers and areas for service enhancement.
• Maintain timely and accurate documentation of student engagement service delivery and referrals using university systems.
• Prepare data summaries and narratives for institutional reports grants audits and program planning.
• Participate in case reviews and team discussions to evaluate complex student situations and improve practices.
• Apply specialized knowledge of the challenges faced by historically marginalized and system-impacted students to guide program development and assessment.
• May be required to obtain additional training and/or certification as part of professional development based on department and/or campus needs to stay current with industry standards.

• At the direction of appropriate administrator may provide support to other departments/areas within functional area/department as needed.

Experience:Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. (A masters degree in Counseling Clinical Psychology Social Work or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.)

• Minimum of three (3) years of direct experience supporting foster youth formerly or currently incarcerated individuals or unaccompanied homeless youth as demonstrated through prior roles.
• Experience facilitating student transitions by addressing barriers such as housing instability financial aid access trauma or navigating intersecting systems of care.
• Experience with reentry or wraparound support services including referrals to housing mental health legal aid or workforce development resources.
• Experience with planning and leading workshops orientation sessions or student engagement events.
• Experience working with diverse student populations including those from underserved low-income or system-impacted backgrounds.
• Prior experience in a higher education or university setting.
• Hands-on experience using student support or case management systems such as EAB Navigate Maxient or PeopleSoft.
• Experience working with community-based organizations focused on social justice reentry foster care or related areas.
• Masters degree in Counseling Clinical Psychology Social Work or a directly related field.

• Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
• General knowledge of the principles practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies procedures activities and practices of the program area to which assigned.
• General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.
• General knowledge or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the overall operation functions programs organizational procedures and activities of the campus.
• Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
• Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
• Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.
• Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.
• Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations analyze and define the problem draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
• Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals to include faculty CSU administrators student organizations and other private and public agencies and others in committee work and student advising and community contacts.

• May be required to work after-hours evenings or weekends.
• May be required to travel between Turlock and Stockton Campuses.
• May be required to stay overnight in on campus housing in support of the annual Summer Bridge Program based on department needs.
• May be required to participate in periodic outdoor events and activities.
