Job Description

The Ohio Latino Affairs Commission is a state agency established by Legislative Act and signed into Law by Governor James Rhodes on July 8 1977. The Statute provided for eleven members on the board of commissioners appointed by the Governor with the advise and consent of the Senate. The Statute requires that all Board Members shall speak Spanish shall be of Hispanic/Latino origin and shall be American citizens or lawful permanent residents. The membership shall be representative of the geographical and numerical distribution of Ohios Hispanic/Latino population.

The purpose of the Ohio Latino Affairs Commission is to advise state government on issues affecting Hispanic Ohioans to connect the diverse Latino communities across the state and to build the capacity of community organizations so they may better serve the fast-growing population of Ohio.

The Public Information Officer 1 plays an important part at the Ohio Latino Affairs Commission. In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Planning and directing the public information program including researching drafting organizing uploading and updating issue papers and legislative analyses on the agency website; maintaining links to policy resources
  • Identifying resources available to Hispanic/Latino communities and assuring access to decision-making bodies in all levels of government
  • Monitoring legislation impacting Latinos and drafting issuing and archiving legislative policy briefs
  • Producing quarterly legislator briefs community reports and responding to ad hoc report requests
  • Coordinating all logistics for Legislative Visit Days and setting up conferences including media arrangements
  • Conducting research for weekly and monthly news briefs and producing bi-monthly articles for Latino media on policy issues
  • Implementing the voter registration campaign plan and facilitating community access to government through systems like the Policy Action Network
  • Preparing and submitting operational budgets with the Executive Director and representing the organization in legislative budget hearings
  • Preparing the commissions annual report
  • Advising and consulting with the Executive Director on legislative and public relations matters; building executive and legislative relationships
  • Maintaining and expanding the policy reports database and library
  • Identifying and building relationships with stakeholders affected by Latino-related policy
  • Providing technical support and policy advice to the Governor General Assembly and state departments on Latino issues
  • Researching and drafting legislation monitoring its movement testifying at hearings and analyzing contracts and program proposals

  • Completion of undergraduate core coursework in journalism or communication including 6 months experience in public multi-media techniques and relations in the field of journalism or communication and a valid drivers license.
  • Or 30 months experience in the field of journalism or communication involving public multi-media techniques and relations public speaking news writing reporting and editing or technical report translation and communication related to public meetings and a valid drivers license.
  • Or 12 months experience as Public Information Specialist 64420 and a valid drivers license.
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Preferred Qualifications for this Position:

  • Able to speak write and interpret Spanish.
  • Unless required by legislation or union contract salary will be set at the lowest rate of the salary range with gradual increases in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code or OCSEA/AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement.
