JOB TITLE: Traffic Signal Technician

DEPARTMENT: Public Works

SUPERVISOR: Project Manager II/Sr.

SALARY RANGE: $27.54- $39.13 per hour

HIRING RANGE: $27.54 - $36.23 per hour Commensurate to experience.

This is a non-exempt/hourly

SCHEDULE/REMOTE/HYBRID: Typical schedules are in-office Monday through Friday 7am - 3:30pm. Flexible scheduling may be discussed upon hire and supervisor approval. Remote or Hybrid work schedules are not available.

RELOCATION: This position is located in Greenwood Village Colorado. Relocation assistance is not provided.

REQUIREMENTS: The minimum requirement for this position is two years of progressively responsible experience in installation operation maintenance and repair of traffic control devices including streetlights; the equivalent to an associates degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in electronics electrical engineering or directly related field or directly related technical trade school certificate or license. Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate valid drivers license and a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the Citys insurance carrier. Possession of IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level II certification. Possession IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level III certification is preferred.

The City of Greenwood Village welcomes your application for the Traffic Signal Technician position within our Public Works Department. The purpose of this position is to perform highly skilled technical work in the installation operation maintenance and repair of traffic control devices to ensure safe efficient and reliable traffic flow throughout the Village.

As a municipal organization Greenwood Village is a provider of emergency services. Some emergency situations including weather-related emergencies may necessitate Greenwood Village employees to assist in areas of work that may not be directly related to the employees specific job function but which will be within the physical capabilities training and skills of the employee.

Distinguishing Characteristics: Our Greenwood Village team has an immediate opening for a qualified Traffic Signal Technician. The ideal candidate is someone that takes initiative exhibits accountability for high quality work and position responsibilities and enjoys being part of a dynamic team.

Essential Functions:

A. Traffic Control Device Installation Control Maintenance and Repair

  • Tests diagnoses installs and repairs specialized electronic equipment and computerized traffic control devices; conducts preventative maintenance inspections of traffic control equipment including devices cabinet and signal pole conditions.
  • Troubleshoots circuits utilizing voltmeter or oscilloscope and related equipment.
  • Designs and installs circuitry to modify operational capabilities of existing equipment.
  • Utilizes and develops timing schedules for control of traffic signal devices; analyzes traffic flow data and makes recommendations for changes to timing.
  • Responds to urgent traffic signal malfunctions; directs traffic; repairs signal; contacts signal contractor if unable to repair.
  • Monitors existing traffic control devices; makes recommendations for replacement.
  • Operates diagnostic equipment.
  • Sets up controllers time clocks microwave detectors emergency vehicle detectors illuminated signs and other signal equipment.
  • Operates equipment such as aerial lift truck hand tools and other mechanized equipment; performs manual labor; works in inclement weather.

B. Street Light Installation Maintenance and Repair

  • Tests diagnoses installs and repairs streetlights.
  • Troubleshoots circuits utilizing voltmeter or oscilloscope and related equipment.
  • Responds to urgent street light malfunctions; directs traffic; repairs streetlights; contacts contractor if unable to repair.
  • Monitors existing streetlights; makes recommendations for replacement.
  • Operates diagnostic equipment.
  • Operates equipment such as aerial lift truck hand tools and other mechanized equipment; performs manual labor; works in inclement weather.

C. Administrative Support

  • Maintains records; creates reports.
  • Maintains supplies and parts inventory; initiates orders for various needed supplies materials and equipment; monitors usage.
  • Works with supervisor to prepare requests for new equipment materials and supplies.

D. Miscellaneous Functions

  • Stays abreast of new trends and technologies available in the field of traffic signals.
  • Attends meetings seminars and conferences.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Position requirements:

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Methods techniques tools and equipment used in performing traffic control installation repair and maintenance.
  • Traffic signal computer systems and traffic control.
  • Principles and practices of electricity electrical wiring conduit bending and solid-state electronics.
  • Uniform Traffic Control Devices guidelines and regulations.
  • Applicable safety practices and procedures.
  • Signal electronics and equipment specifications.
  • Modern office procedures methods and computer equipment.
  • Maintain the traffic signal system equipment including street lights.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose electronic equipment and malfunctions in traffic control devices including street lights.
  • Operate and use electronic testing equipment.
  • Read understand and apply technical manuals.
  • Apply applicable safety practices and procedures.
  • Use independent judgment and identify options and alternatives.
  • Organize work activities in order to complete tasks by established deadlines.
  • Use computer equipment.
  • Perform manual labor.
  • Work in high and precarious places (more than 30 feet from the ground).
  • Be alert to peripheral activities when operating equipment.
  • Prepare clear and concise records.
  • Organize workload to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of effectively communicating and interacting with others.
  • Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities including repetitive walking bending stooping kneeling or standing for prolonged periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting weighing up to 50 pounds; fine motor control of hands and fingers to handle control and feel objects tools controls and computers; and operating motorized equipment and vehicles.

Experience and Training:

  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in installation operation maintenance and repair of traffic control devices including street lights.

Licenses or Certificates:

Equipment Utilized:

Uses equipment such as aerial lift truck hand tools and other mechanized equipment; standard office equipment including computers printers telephone copy machine and calculator; smart phone; motor vehicle.

Contact with Others:

Regular contact with internal personnel outside contractors and vendors and the general public requiring tact to avoid friction.

Supervisory Requirements:

Receives direction from Project Manager II Sr.

Field Work:

Field work may involve hazardous situations including working in high traffic areas. Must be physically capable of safely moving around traffic control equipment including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds regular walking and standing climbing ladders and being in high situation in a bucket truck elevated above traffic.

May require shift weekend or off hour day work; may receive calls on a 24hour basis; and may be required to appear onsite as a result of an emergency situation during off duty hours.
