Job Summary

The Exercise Physiologist is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the cardiac stress lab which includes the EKG department. Under the general supervision of a cardiologist the exercise physiologist will independently perform ETTs stress echoes and nuclear stress tests. Exercise physiologists are responsible for scheduling inpatient cardiac stress exams preparing patients for cardiac stress tests performing EKGs recording vital signs including manual blood pressures reviewing patient lab results and compiling a preliminary stress test report.

Primary Responsibilities:

-Independently performs the following cardiac stress tests: Nuclear Stress exercise Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT); Exercise Stress Echocardiogram
Independently performs the following tests with Cardiologist administering the pertinent drugs: Pharmacological Nuclear Stress and Pharmacological Stress Echocardiogram.
-Assesses each patient via patient chart prior to testing as necessary.
-Reviews patient lab results (troponin CPK etc.) as necessary prior to testing.
-Explains testing procedure to patient and prepares patient for testing.
-Utilizes critical judgement skills and monitors patient for clinical responses (both normal and abnormal) based on indications for test.
-Evaluates patients hemodynamic and cardiac rhythm responses while detecting abnormal responses to both BP and cardiac rhythms (arrythmias etc.).
-Recognizes and determines testing endpoint based on testing criteria EKG changes or hemodynamic response while ensuring patient safety at all times.
-Recognizes and requests cardiologist presence during testing if clinically warranted.
-Recognizes when to consult with the cardiologist prior to starting an exam if there are baseline clinical or safety concerns.
-Enters accurate test results into Epic and MUSE reporting systems.
-Creates preliminary report on cardiac database.
-Can appropriately respond to a patient emergency per hospital and department protocols.
-Ensures equipment checks and infection control procedures are performed as per policy.
-Ensures accurate data entry and verifies it is transmitted correctly.
-Covers for EKG lab techs when necessary including performing EKGs and setting up Holter monitors.



Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelors degree in exercise physiology exercise science or kinesiology
  • Required: current BLS
  • Required: RCEP or ACSM certification upon hire or within one year
  • No licensure required in Massachusetts.
  • At least two years of direct patient care experience required
  • Applicants with a Masters degree may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Staff adheres to all I.C.A.R.E Standards
  • Performs accurate and readable EKG recordings.
  • Excellent patient service skills required; supports service excellence initiatives and service excellence in all interactions with patients patient family members/caregivers and staff.
  • Can manually measure blood pressures.
  • Able to recognize artifact and life-threatening arrhythmias on EKG recordings.
  • Must interact respectfully with all departmental and hospital staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills written & oral communications with all departmental and hospital staff.
  • Must be able to multi-task and think and act proactively.
