Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Support Services this position will advise undergraduate students on their academic plans and progress in their degree completion manage academic scheduling each term develop and manage advising workshops and support retention initiatives. They are the single point of access for students and provide student-centered support services. The Academic Advisor 1 will display a high-level of student service to ensure retention student satisfaction and success of students.
About the Department
The Student Support Services department operates in three distinct divisions: Advising Operations and Student Life & Wellness. Each division is managed by a senior director and houses numerous student support divisions that service all students at The Chicago School. We aim to create a thorough support network for students and to enhance their classroom education through cocurricular experiences. All staff in the department administer a high level of customer service to ensure student persistence and success. Student Support Services team members work collaboratively within the office and with many other campus-wide constituent groups. Team members are expected to exercise a high degree of responsibility and independent judgment and to work hours consistent with the campus student populations need for access to services which will include occasional evenings and weekends.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES
Advise and schedule students for program courses each academic term in consultation with the Academic department and Student Support department.
Administration of advising services including registration evaluation of program requirements course/program content incomplete grades student class activity Satisfactory Academic Progress and overall degree progress.
Serves as a resource for department leadership faculty and staff in matters related to academic support services.
Meet with students who are returning to the program to identify methods of increasing the likelihood of their academic success upon their return.
Work with and support new and continuing students at various stages of their education.
Call/meet with each student throughout the term to ensure they are successfully completing coursework and to provide support.
Manage and provide detailed reports on academic advising outcomes.
Ensure students academic account/record are accurate and up-to-date by clear and timely processing of important academic forms (e.g. Add/Drop Withdrawal Leave of Absence etc.).
Advising at-risk students through work/life balance time management other circumstances to ensure successful completion of the course and program.
Collaborate with various student facing departments such as Academics Financial Aid Admissions and Student Accounts to ensure the success of the student.
Work with the Office of the Registrar to ensure that incoming and current students receive timely information and guidance regarding institutional policies course registration program completion etc.
Advise students on support services and resources available to them through their school.
Essential Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Displays professionalism in all interactions.
Excellent writing interpersonal and PC skills (Word Excel Power Point).
Ability to collaborate and communicate with all students regardless of educational level as well as all employees regardless of position/title.
Experience/comfort with utilizing technology in an educational setting preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Position Qualifications
Bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Education Counseling or academic field directly related to the Academic Advisors specific responsibilities. A masters degree is preferred.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in higher education preferably with a background in advising
Record of success in student retention and advising including with non-traditional learners
Commitment to advocating for the learning and development needs of students in distance learning environments
Excellent organizational written and verbal skills
Ability to perform work in a fast-paced environment
Compensation Range
Compensation Range - $29.44/hour
