Welcome to the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM). What we want
The Animal Caretaker I under direct supervision assists and supports faculty and technicians in providing animal care to lab and teaching facilities. Includes assisting with handling and restraint of teaching animals; animal husbandry; cleaning kennel areas classrooms lab space and large animal teaching environments; laundry feeding routine observations; operating mechanical equipment; performing minor maintenance and repair; and providing occasional student worker direction.

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree in Animal Science or Related Certified Veterinary Assistant AAALAC/AALAS Certification
More than one-year full time experience in animal handling and care preferably in TAMU System.
TAMU experience within Comparative Medicine program or other teaching environment.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Oral and written communication skills.
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Ability to work around animals dust or hay.
Responsibilities
CLEANING & SANITATION:
Assists faculty and staff with cleaning and disinfect animal surgical anesthesia and teaching areas to include indoor and outdoor facilities per SOP. Clean floors walls bedding sinks corridors windows ceilings and cabinets.
Cleans and disinfects corridors after animals are dismissed.
Empties manure cans and trash receptacles daily which includes scrubbing and disinfecting.
Maintains care and service of equipment.
Launders and folds bedding surgical items or other items as directed.
TEACHING LAB SUPPORT:
Assists under the direct supervision of faculty or technicians with: Positioning of animals for teaching labs or surgical procedures; handling and restraining animals for teaching labs to include dogs cats goats rats horses and cattle; assisting with setup of various teaching labs not limited to preparation of models animals and various supplies; assisting with breakdown of the lab upon completion.
Assists with surgical pack preparation; to include: washing instruments sorting and packing instruments pack wrapping autoclave use.
ANIMAL CARE:
Provides feed water and care to animals in stalls and cage.
Stocks bedding and feeding areas.
Transports animal feed from storage area.
Brushes bathes dries and exercises animals as directed.
TRANSPORTATION:
Transports animals and supplies to teaching lab to include dogs cats goats rats horse and cattle.
Transports tissue to and from biowaste facility as needed / directed.
Assists with necropsy procedures.
TEACHING MODEL CARE:
Provides care of various teaching models used in the curriculum to include intensive SynDaver care following department standard operating procedures and schedule.
