Position Summary The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) provides direct individual care to residents of Neuvant House of Lawrence (NHL). The CMA will assist residents of NHL with activities of daily living to ensure the highest quality of services in a manner that is consistent with the philosophy of NHL. These activities may include but are not limited to ambulating bathing bed mobility dressing eating personal hygiene toileting and transferring light housekeeping management of medications and medical treatments . The CMA will assist residents who are functionally physically and/or socially impaired and who need 24-hour support. The CMAs role is always to assist the resident as needed but to foster the residents independence and freedom of choice. Position Duties Medication Provision: 1. Provide medication administration or assist with self -administration of medication as authorized by the applicable Kansas Regulations and delegated by NHL licensed nurse. Activities of Daily Living (ADL): 1. Aid with dressing and undressing (clothing should be neat clean and appropriate for the season). 2. Aid with bathing personal hygiene (e.g. shaving dental hygiene nail care hair care foot care) toileting ambulation bed mobility and transferring. 3. Aid with eating. 4. Aid with mobility devices (e.g. cane walker wheelchair crutches brace prosthesis mechanical lift etc.) including monitoring of safe transfer and ambulation techniques. 5. Aid with care of such devices as eyeglasses contact lenses hearing aids and dentures. 6. Aid with telephone (assist with calls hearing and vision adaptive devices) shopping money management and laundry. 7. Assist with light housekeeping tasks such as vacuuming emptying trash cleaning bathroom bed making and bed changes. 8. Escort residents and coordinate transportation needs provide transportation and assist with residents personal correspondence when requested. 9. Provide health care services as directed by the Licensed Nurse. 10. Report significant changes in a residents condition to facility management. Health Maintenance and Monitoring: 1. Observe report and document changes in the residents physical condition and cognitive/emotional status to the Licensed Nurse or as otherwise directed but do not exercise nursing judgment or other interventions such as assessments. 2. Monitor for environmental safety hazards and promote the health and safety of residents other employees and the public. 3. Work with outside resources such as home health agencies pharmacies and therap ists as required. Dietary: 1. Assist in a variety of tasks related to dining to include but not limited to setting up and cleaning tables serving meals dish washing preparing light meals and/or snacks etc. 2. Escort residents to and from the dining room. 3. Follow the food service requirements for safety and sanitation Activities: 1. Participate in and support the resident-centered activity program. 2. Assist in helping residents to remember and participate in activities 3. Facilitate and help coordinate activities such as gardening and cooking. Emergency Preparedness: 1. Respond to and act appropriately in emergency situations. 2. Take residents who require assistance in an emergency or disaster to a secure location. 3. Attend orientation and other in-service programs regarding the emergency management plan. 4. Assist with the education of each resident regarding emergency procedures . 5. Participate in the required emergency drills. 6. Be aware of the emergency management plan and participate in required emergency drills and reviews of the plan. Infection Control: 1. Use universal precautions to prevent the spread of blood-borne pathogens. 2. Use techniques to ensure hand hygiene meets professional health care standards. 3. Follow techniques to ensure laundering and handling of soiled and clean linens meet professional health care standards. 4. Follow facility policy if there is an incident of a communicable disease or any infected skin lesions. 5. Comply with orientation and in-service education on the control of infections. 6. Follow the agency guidelines on tuberculosis testing related precautions and treatments. Maintenance/Physical Plant: 1. Assist with the general cleanliness livability upkeep and comfort of the community and grounds. 2. Make efforts to ensure a safe and sanitary environment. General Responsibilities: 1. Plan and complete duties with minimal direction from Administrator ensure that assigned tasks are completed and responsibilities are fulfilled. 2. Provide supports and services that promote healthy living and lifestyles for residents residing at Neuvant House of Lawrence and that promote independence individuality autonomy dignity choice privacy and a home environment. 3. Work collaboratively with peers and other team members. 4. Use tactful diplomatic communication techniques in potentially sensitive or emotionally charged situations. 5. Prevent abuse neglect or exploitation of residents and provide care in a manner that prevents incidents accidents resident complaints and concerns. 6. Act as an ambassador and public relations representative to guests and other off -campus visitors. 7. Display a courteous and helpful manner and maintain highly effective receptive and expressive communication with residents families visitors and fellow employees. 8. Protect the confidentiality and rights of all residents and ensure resident self -direction and participation in decisions. 9. Promote Neuvant House of Lawrence as a leader in personal memory care and demonstrate an appreciation of the heritage values and wisdom of the residents receiving services and an understanding of the aging process and the disease progression of Dementia Alzheimer s Disease and related disorders. 10. Attend and participate in staff meetings in-services projects or committees as requested. 11. Adhere to the prescribed dress code and maintain good personal hygiene practices. 3 Certified Medication Aide Position Requirements Minimum: Team members must have completed high school (or the equivalency); be at least 18 years of age; comply with the tobacco free policy; work flexible hours including evenings weekends holidays and/or overnights; possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills; possess a valid drivers license; and have a good understanding of medical/pharmacological terminology. Team members must also have the ability to relate to residents and other staff in a courteous and diplomatic manner and be able to provide awake and responsive care; must have full range of motion physical strength (lifting up to 65 pounds) and ability to achieve and maintain required training and certifications as required. Be able to pass required background checks. Possess and be in good standing with regards to being on the Nurse Aide and Certified Medication Aide registry per the state of Kansas requirements and meet the on-going requirements of continuing education to maintain CMA and CNA certification. Preferred: Two years of professional work experience in a human service or health related field or with individuals in an assisted living or memory support. Performance Expectations Working Conditions and Demands Team members are expected to demonstrate reliable consistent and predictable attendance and report for work physically and mentally prepared to adequately perform the functions of the position. While in a paid status staff members are expected to be actively and positively engaged in official NHL work related activities. NHL maintains a safe work environment through training and continuous improvement. Team members are expected to remain professional non-judgmental and mature in the presence of situations that might be morally or socially offensive. If there is discomfort with any interactions or situations for which a staff member requires guidance direction or training he or she is required to inform the Administrator to gain such support. State laws prohibit abuse or neglect of vulnerable adults. All NHL residents are covered by these statutes. Team members will report any suspicion of abuse or neglect to the Administrator; and all allegations must be reported to the proper authorities under State Law. Team members must be able to lift at minimum 65 pounds walk 4 miles daily and be able to carry stand bend squat crawl reach push pull twist and kneel using good body mechanics for sustained periods of time. As with any profession supporting people this position can be both extremely rewarding and there can also be difficult days. At times you may find your most worthwhile days at work can be assisting someone through a challenging time.
