Fisk University invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured Assistant or Associate Professor of English with a specialization in British Literature beginning August 2025. We seek a dynamic and innovative professional to teach mentor and guide students and elevate our vibrant program in English.

This position is within the Department of Arts and Languages in the School of Humanities & Behavioral Social Sciences. Fisk is an historically Black university (HBCU) that is deeply committed to academic excellence social justice and the holistic development of students.

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching: Teach a 12-credit-hour course load per semester including a range of undergraduate courses in British Literature (e.g. surveys period-specific courses genre studies) and foundational courses in English composition and literature. The successful candidate will be expected to develop innovative curricula that engage with emergent pedagogies and connect British literary traditions to broader historical and cultural contexts particularly those relevant to the experiences of our diverse student body.
  • Research: Maintain an active research agenda leading to scholarly publications in British Literature Digital Humanities postcolonial studies and/or other related sub-genres. We welcome research that explores interdisciplinary connections engages with postcolonial studies (or other relevant theoretical frameworks) and contributes to the ongoing scholarly conversation in the broader field. The successful candidate would support undergraduate student research.
  • Service: Participate actively in departmental college and university-wide committees and initiatives. This includes advising students developing curriculum and contributing to the intellectual life of the university.
  • Collaboration: The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with colleagues on projects related to emergent pedagogies curriculum design and programming that highlight the historical and cultural relevance of literary studies. The candidate will also promote interdisciplinary connections and collaborations within the Department and across the University; facilitate student recruitment retention and success; and contribute to the Universitys shared governance through committee participation. The candidate will also collaborate with the tandem units such as the W. E. B. Du Bois Honors Program John R. Lewis Center for Social Justice the Office of Career Planning & Development and the Office of Global Affairs among others.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree) in English (or a closely related field) with a specialty in British literature (or a closely related field).
  • A distinguished or emerging record of teaching scholarship and service commensurate with appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
  • Experience with technology-enhanced instruction and digital tools/data analytics to enhance student learning.
  • Experience working with students from various racial ethnic cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • A commitment to advising mentoring and supporting students from underrepresented groups.
  • A strong commitment to the mission and values of Fisk University.
  • A visionary approach to the future of the arts and languages in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Record of successful grant writing.
  • Record of publishing and presenting at conferences.
  • Familiarity with the mission and culture of HBCUs.
  • Active participation in professional organizations.
  • Experience developing and implementing culturally responsive teaching practices.
