The Pacific Northwest College of the Arts (PNCA) invites applications for a part-time faculty position in the undergraduate Bachelor of Fine Arts program to teach a Junior Level Studio Lighting class for the Photography Department during the Fall 2025 semester. This course meets in-person at our campus at 511 NW Broadway in Portland Oregon. This is a three-credit studio class that runs every Monday 10:50 am to 4:50 pm (with a one hour lunch break) for 16 weeks August 25 - December 8.
The ideal candidate will have both industry and teaching experience as well as a solid understanding of photographic strobe equipment and best practices for digital workflow. This is the second studio lighting course that PNCA Photo Majors are required to take and focuses on the use of strobe equipment in our lighting studio and in mixed lighting scenarios. While focusing mostly on technical skills this class also teaches students to advance their conceptual intent and individual expression through formal choices. Class time will be spent in discussion lecture demonstrations and hands-on learning in the studio. Past syllabi and course materials will be provided and can be modified but should be followed. Course description is as follows:
As a continuation of Studio Lighting Essentials this course will focus on the manipulation and control of photographic lighting to align with conceptual intent. Students will work with strobe light kits and a wide range of modifiers and grip equipment both in and out of the studio. They will practice mixing available light and flash in complex lighting scenarios while using tethered digital workflow with Adobe Lightroom and Capture One software. Professional practice will be taught through consideration of scenarios that involve working with clients drawing up contracts and collaborating in groups. Assignments readings and lectures will expose students to contemporary and historic photographic lighting techniques in both fine art and commercial contexts.
Minimum Qualifications
MFA or MA
Demonstrated achievement and involvement in chosen discipline.
As this course is in person on the PNCA campus in Portland the instructor must live in Portland or the surrounding area.
Willingness to learn and use Canvas PNCAs Learning Management System.
Preferred qualifications
Teaching experience
Photography industry experience or active creative practice
Expert photographic digital capture and lighting knowledge
