  • Job Title: Director of Human Resources
    Location: Catholic Diocese of Peoria Peoria IL
    Reports To: Chief Operating Officer

    About the Role
    The Catholic Diocese of Peoria is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Director of Human Resources to lead and oversee all HR functions across the Diocese. This leadership role will ensure the implementation of effective compliant and values-based HR strategies in alignment with the spiritual and operational mission of the Diocese. The Director will collaborate with Diocesan leadership clergy schools parishes and external partners to build a workplace that supports and engages all employees.

    What You Will Do

    HR Operations
    • Oversee onboarding and offboarding processes for all Diocesan employees.
    • Administer senior clergy benefits including financial processing Medicare transitions and communications regarding dues housing and actuarial data.
    • Manage unemployment claims including claim validity reviews quarterly reimbursements to IDES and support for protests as needed.
    • Contribute to annual budget projections and employee cost-sharing strategies.
    • Oversee third-party welfare benefit service providers and consultants.
    Employee Relations
    • Serve as a trusted HR advisor for schools and parishes addressing employee-related concerns.
    • Collaborate with supervisor and Legal Counsel on complex employee relations matters.
    Total Rewards: Compensation & Benefits
    • Develop and distribute employee benefit materials during annual enrollment.
    • Coordinate and communicate annual open enrollment activities.
    • Provide direct support for employee inquiries regarding life insurance disability FMLA and other benefits.
    • Resolve claims and benefit issues in coordination with consultants and providers.
    • Administer billing and payments related to premiums claims and ancillary benefit costs.
    • Monitor benefits reporting and collaborate with Finance on cost tracking.
    • Oversee outside medical services for clergy.
    • Manage the 403(b) retirement plan: oversee enrollments payroll deductions deposits rollovers loans and withdrawals.
    Employee & Leadership Development
    • Deliver training sessions and resources to support employee and leadership development across the Diocese.
    • Promote ongoing learning tools to strengthen employee and manager capabilities.
    Employee Engagement Culture & Retention
    • Develop and share HR-related communications for Curia parishes and clergy Connections newsletters.
    • Maintain and enhance employee recognition programs.
    HR Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable employment laws and regulations (EEOC DOL IDES etc.).
    • Manage HR policy updates handbook revisions and compliance audits.
    • Represent the Diocese in any employment-related hearings or legal matters.
    Recruitment
    • Lead recruitment efforts for Curia staff including job postings applicant screening and coordination with departments.
    • Support schools and parishes with recruitment strategies and resources.
    Performance Management
    • Maintain and update job descriptions for Curia positions; assist with descriptions for parish and schools.
    • Lead the design and rollout of performance evaluation systems.
    Health Safety & Wellness
    • Promote wellness initiatives through the Diocesan health plan and external partners.
    • Identify and implement wellness opportunities for both clergy and employees.
    What You Will Have
    • Bachelors degree in Human Resources Organizational Development Business Administration or related fieldor a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to fulfill this role.
    • Strong leadership interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
    • Strategic thinking with the ability to manage complex multi-unit environments.
    • Sound understanding of HR principles practices and employment law.
    • Discretion in handling sensitive information and emotionally charged situations.
    • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
    Top Candidates Will Also Have
    • Experience working in a nonprofit or Church-based environment.
    • Familiarity with the structure and operations of Catholic organizations.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word Outlook Excel).
