Job Description

Hiring for Emergency Room RN (FT) at Methodist McKinney Hospital

PRN Status - Night Shift

QUALIFICATIONS

Degree from accredited nursing program. (ADN required)

Current and Valid License as a Registered Nurse (Texas)

Minimum of 3 years work experience as a RN in area of expertise

Required upon hire certifications based on unit worked: BLS ACLS PALS

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE

Category I exposure to blood borne pathogens frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs nursing assessment/data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner focusing on physiologic psychological and cognitive status.

Formulates a goal directed plan of care which is prioritized and based on determined nursing diagnosis and patient outcomes.

Implements care in a knowledgeable skilled consistent manner in reaching the desired patient outcomes through nursing processes.

Establish priorities of patient care based on essential patient needs and available center resources of time personnel equipment and supplies.

Performs efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols remaining calm informing appropriate persons and documenting events.

Demonstrates applied knowledge base in areas of medical/surgical patient care pain assessment and actions of pharmaceuticals and anesthetic agents laboratory values safety and legal issues and all emergency equipment.

Practices effective problem identification and resolution skills as a method of sound decision making.

Performs documentation duties on the unit and in the patient record which is timely accurate and concise. This includes documentation in the electronic medical record.

Works as part of the team in delivering patient care.

Maintains CPR/ACLS/PALS certification as required by specialty department.

Attends all mandatory in services and participates in staff meetings.

Remains flexible adaptive and able to accept and implement new ideas and approaches.

Treats all patients equally adopting the hospitals Patient Rights policy.

Reviews and carries out physician orders in an appropriate professional manner.

Willingness to assist with other duties when asked.

Laboratory Point of Care Testing:

    • Emergency nursing staff assigned to laboratory point of care testing will be trained on the proper use of the following instruments such as: Triage Meter EPOC meter BGEM tests Accuchek meter (glucose) Clinitek instrument (urinalysis). ER nurses will also be trained to test patients for Rapid Strep Rapid HIV Mono Flu A/B RSV Urine Drug Screens (medical only) and stool occult blood. Phlebotomy training will be reviewed for specimen collection in the absence of lab staff.
    • All other general nursing staff outside of the ER and assigned to lab point of care testing will be trained on the proper use of the Accuchek for bedside glucose testing only. Phlebotomy training will be reviewed for specimen collection in the absence of lab staff.
    • All nurses in all areas will be oriented on the blood bank processes for product issue required transfusion record documentation suspected transfusion reaction record process patient specimen procurement and after-hours blood bank processes for issue of products remote alarm monitoring and record documentation in the absence of lab staff.
