POSITION SUMMARY
The Histology Assistant performs tasks in Pathology under the supervision of Histotechnologist or Pathologist. The Histology Assistant is responsible for the accessioning processing and managing of specimens to be sent out to external facilities. This role requires meticulous attention to detail and organizational skills to ensure that specimens are properly handled logged and sent out efficiently. The Histology assistant will also be responsible for maintaining quality control and assisting with various administrative tasks related to specimen management. This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and six or more month of experience as Histology Assistant. The individual in this role will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values of Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital and support the Hospitals strategic plan goals and quality improvement processes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under the supervision of the Histotechnologist or Pathologist:
- Prepare and Accession Specimens for send out testing: Log in specimens in Pathnet create requisitions file them and discard specified placentas.
- Check and print pending logs ensure results are reported timely - Answer Calls and Assist with Issues: Handle inquiries and issues from various departments and personnel including Neo APMG MR Coroner and Pathologists Provide reports and slides for patients being transferred or as requested handle requests for blood or other specimens from the Coroner.
- Print/file/fax abnormal pathology reports as requested by physicians file slides returned from APMG. APMG Pathologist Consult Binder: Keep the binder updated.
- Manage update and maintain the cancer registry manage inventory and order necessary supplies.
- Assist with FNA and bone marrow procedures as required Support the collection and processing of bone marrow biopsies. Manage the collection and sending of renal biopsies to respective hospitals.
- Support frozen section procedures as needed.
- Adheres to Laboratory Services and hospital policies and procedures for safety standard precautions chemical hygiene and exposure control and quality assurance
- Ensures that established policies procedures and documentation are performed related to laboratory billing practices
- Meets appropriate performance expectations and job standards and competencies.
- Assist with preparation for CAP (College of American Pathologists) inspections.
- Assist with other tasks as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A. Education
- AA Certification in biology or related degree.
B. Qualifications/Experience
- At least six months experience in Pathology is preferred.
C. Special Skills/Knowledge
- Proficient with laboratory information systems (LIS) and computer applications.
- Telephone skills
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
