Summary
The Clinical Laboratory Technologist I (CLT I) in their role as testing personnel is responsible for specimen processing test performance and reporting waived and non-waived test results. Under general supervision each individual performs only those tests authorized by the laboratory director and that require a level of skill appropriate to the individuals education training experience and technical abilities. The Clinical Laboratory Technologist II (CLT II) as defined by CLIA also carries out all policies and performs tests in accordance with the departments standard operating procedures. They work independently in an efficient and organized manner to ensure accurate results and proper documentation. This role requires a professional level of knowledge to accurately read and interpret test results used by providers in diagnosing and treating diseases.

Essential Functions (as outlined by CLIA after successful completion of orientation training and competency assessment on all applicable instruments/methods):

Follow the laboratorys procedures for specimen handling and processing test analyses reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

Maintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.

Adhere to the laboratorys quality control policies and document all quality control activities instrument/procedure calibrations and maintenance performed.

Follow the laboratorys corrective action policies and procedures when test systems do not meet established performance levels.

Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or result reporting; either correct the issues or notify the appropriate supervisor consultant or director.

Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications (42 CFR 493..1495).

If qualified under 493.1489(b)(5) perform high-complexity testing only under the onsite direct supervision of a general supervisor qualified under 493.1461.



Qualifications

Education
Bachelors Degree Laboratory Sciences preferred or Bachelors Degree in a Biological Science required.

Additional responsibilities may include the following under the direction of the Technical Director and Clinical Supervisor:

1. Perform routine and high complexity laboratory tests and procedures on blood and other body fluids or tissues according to laboratory policies including tissue culture and wet lab duties; operation of automated harvester and cell scanner

2. Prepare samples and reagents for testing according to laboratory policies

3. Log in samples and review submitted clinical data to allow appropriate pre-analytic triage of specimens

4. Participate in assigned quality control or quality assurance activities and assist with ordering supplies or maintaining stocks

5. Participate in scheduled technical meetings and assigned wet lab aspects of CAP proficiency testing

6. Identify problems and bring them to the attention of senior technical staff. Assist with troubleshooting of workflows or equipment and other issues related to routine operations of laboratory with supervision as required.

7. Keep current with regards to developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques

8. Participate in internal and external continuing education.

9. Additional responsibilities may include ordering and maintaining an appropriate level of inventory and laboratory supplies.

10. Promote the mission and vision of Brigham and Womens Hospital and laboratories and a spirit of professionalism and excellence in performance among the laboratory staff.

11. Adhere to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures and plans including infection control and safety plans

12. Performs any other duties as required which may include but not limited to general laboratory duties such as processing specimens logging in specimens putting supplies away washing pipettes discarding laboratory samples and racking samples

- Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols including communication with supervisors when issues are identified.

- Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff including physicians hospital personnel employees and patients.
