Job Description

Description

This position promotes student success and increases student enrollment and retention through the provision of quality academic advising regular monitoring of students academic progress and appropriate referral for students who are at-risk or in need of additional resources. The position also coordinates with the director to serve as the primary point of contact for the Universitys academic recovery program. The final title salary grade and starting salary will be determined by the successful candidates education and experience relevant to this position.

Essential Job Duties

  • Coordinate with the director to serve as the primary point of contact for the Universitys academic recovery program;
  • Work to develop and compile packets for new and existing student orientation events;
  • Assist with orientation freshmen and transfer events Preview Day etc.;
  • Consult regularly with faculty colleagues in order to have up-to-date information;
  • Discuss and reinforce linkages and relationships between advisees and their instructional programs including developing relationships with faculty and peers in their disciplines;
  • Document advising appointments through department approved check sheet software currently DegreeWorks and internal databases;
  • Interpret and provide rationale for institutional policies procedures and requirements;
  • Regularly monitor all advisees using the universitys early alert software and follow-up with the advisees who are at-risk of failing or dropping out of a course(s);
  • Inform and if necessary refer students to other institutional resources when academic attitudinal attendance or other personal problems require intervention by other professionals. (e.g. University Case Manager);
  • Proactively contact and be available for student advisees on a regular basis;
  • Office hours should be posted on the advisors office door and preferably given to the advisee early in the semester;
  • Advisors should plan for extended hours during pre-registration advising;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES (Retention Advisor only):
  • Provide training and mentorship for new staff and student employees;
  • Responsible for identifying an area for enhancing departmental services (e.g. integration of new technologies) and develop and maintain a plan for continuous improvement in that area.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required;
  • One to two years of related experience preferred;
  • Masters degree or 2 years of related higher education experience to be considered for placement at the advisor level.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Capable of thinking and acting independently;
  • Understanding of higher education student support activities;
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work in a demanding and fast-paced office environment;
  • Ability to adapt to changing guidelines;
  • Ability to use Banner and early alert warning systems;
  • General computer literacy and ability to use Microsoft Office applications;
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse array of students faculty staff administrators parents visitors vendors guests and the general public;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
