What you will be doing:
We are currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Mailroom Technician II for the Alaska State Legislature. In this role you will provide Legislative Offices at the Capitol complex with mail room distribution and shipping services. You will also assist with Capitol Supply room duties interact with a diverse range of individuals and develop a fundamental understanding of the Alaska legislature and state government.

Youd be a great fit if:

  • Working knowledge of handling sorting and delivering mail and postal regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to lift and bundle mailbags and packages that may weigh up to 80 pounds.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others.
  • Ability to maintain the security of confidential and valuable material and information.
  • Ability to maintain delivery schedules perform under deadlines and operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to operate mail processing equipment.
  • Ability to use computers and adapt to changing technology.

Example of Tasks:
Note: We will provide training

  • Picks up mail and packages from federal post office. X-rays mail and packages to look for suspicious contents according to US Postal Service and other guidelines. Sorts and processes mail and packages for distribution throughout the Capitol complex.
  • Distributes mail into designated bins and picks up outgoing mail from legislative offices and agencies.
  • Hand delivers certified registered and express mail to legislative offices and agencies. Receives sorts processes distributes and delivers interdepartmental mail and packages.
  • Distributes packets of materials for legislators and legislative staff.
  • Operates postage machines and other mail-processing equipment and software. Observes security precautions in handling confidential or valuable material.
  • Keeps detailed records of shipping and mailing usage for legislative offices and agencies.
  • Assist legislative offices and agencies with mailing and shipping materials guidelines and shipping time frames.
  • Assist with supply room duties and operations as needed.
  • Assist with reporting of legislative office and agency shipping and mailing usage reports.
  • Stay up-to date on postal and shipping rate adjustments and advise when adjustments are approaching.

Work/Life Balance

  • The potential for flexible work schedules during interim when the legislature is not in session.
  • Agency staff may accrue as compensatory time up to 150 hours worked over the standard work week. There is no cash value to compensatory time.
  • The State offers paid leave starting at 6:04 (hh:mm) a pay period or 21 days a year. If you have previous time working for the State of Alaska in a leave eligible position the time will be calculated into your accrual rate.
  • 12 paid State holidays each year effective 2025.
  • The Legislative Affairs Agency is a family-friendly employer.
  • The Alaska State Legislature has an onsite daycare with priority given to legislative employees children

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.
At least one year of relevant work experience is desired.
Current valid Alaska Drivers License with clean driving record.
