About the role

The Boots Digital Health Head of Development plays a vital role in our future growth overseeing the strategic planning coordination and execution of all software development for Boots Online Dr. This role is pivotal to ensuring a seamless information flow between the design team software engineers and stakeholders providing proven technical expertise and great personal skills to drive the engineering team to deliver value for the business.


Reporting to the IT Director and leading a high performing team they will support the creation and ongoing management of the overall technical strategy of the application and platform focused on delivering high value software developments to support the challenging business strategic goals.


Utilizing SAFe methodologies they will continue to focus on continuous improvement to drive value from the existing team capacity overseeing continued expansion of the team whilst ensuring the application is supportable secure and performant.

Key responsibilities

  • Value Driven delivery prioritize and deliver work based on the value it drives now and unlocks into the future. Support business growth through optimized technical solutions.

  • Best Practice and Process Improvement harness a culture of continuous improvement focus on driving best practice both internally with development processes but customer facing with technical solutions.

  • Capacity and budget ensure team capacity planning and financial tracking is in place and managed. Capital responsibility of c.1m and revenue of c.1m. Ensure forecast accuracy and time booking of team to enable accurate accuracy of financial tracking.

  • High Performing Team lead a high performing team of 40 across all software engineering proficiencies. Ensuring that the team adheres to development standards and best practices. Direct line management of 4 individuals. Coaching and developing the existing team and provide oversight of recruitment in line with the growth plan.

  • Stakeholder collaboration build and maintain strong relationships with all key stakeholders with the BDH and wider Boots organization

  • Risk and Issue Management ensure issues are prioritized and managed within providing 24/7 support across the team. Identify key technical risks and ensure these are escalated and managed appropriately

  • Innovation & Roadmap support creation and management of the application innovation and development roadmap.

What youll need to have

  • Expertise in working with diverse architectural styles (e.g. monolithic service-based microservices) and integration patterns across various platforms (e.g. broker models RESTful APIs streaming event-driven architectures).

  • Strong knowledge and experience in implementing techniques that enhance system resilience and scalability.

  • Experience applying principles from Lean and Systems Thinking to engineering practices.

  • Experience in the technical implementation of packaged solutions in complex environments.

  • Leading and motivating the team providing guidance and support

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to gather project requirements and ensure alignment.

  • Experience of AI models and use in healthcare or retail environments

  • Experience of Mobile Application Delivery and enablement

  • Background and understanding of DevOps and Ci/CD automation testing and deployment

  • Experience of guiding supporting and motivating multidisciplinary teams

  • Security and Compliance understand best practices and industry regulations required to deliver secure products

  • Stakeholder management have a voice and be willing to appropriately challenge
