Overview of the Barwon Health Deakin University Clinical Trials Alliance
The Deakin University Faculty of Health is dedicated to being at the forefront of teaching learning creating and social development and fostering cutting-edge research and discovery. The Faculty places high emphasis on research that makes a difference and is solution-led. We work closely with industry and healthcare partners and government to put findings into practice.
The Barwon Health Deakin University Clinical Trials Alliance (the Alliance) will commence operations in 2026 and is a key pillar of both Deakins Health and Community Trials Network and Barwon Healths Research Strategic Plan. The Alliance will be a transformational partnership establishing a nationally leading model for integrated clinical trials research and healthcare delivery.
Leveraging the unique strengths of both institutions to enhance health outcomes equity and access to clinical trials across the Barwon South-West region the Alliance is investing in workforce development and capability building to support the delivery of impactful clinical trials across the region. It will combine establishment of the Deakin Trials Hub with Barwon Healths established clinical trials capability and a shared vision to improve community outcomes through better access to cutting-edge therapies and evidence-based person-centred care.

Barwon Health
Barwon Health is one of Australias largest and most comprehensive regional health services providing care at all stages of life and circumstance. Services available through Barwon Health cover the full spectrum from primary care to community services aged care rehabilitation mental health emergency and acute care. Barwon Health serves more than 500000 people through the efforts of more than 9000 staff and volunteers across more than 20 sites.

It has extensive expertise in clinical trial delivery developed over the last three decades supported by a robust corporate and clinical governance oversight framework. Clinical trial teams at Barwon Health provide access to novel therapies and drive a culture of enquiry and rigour. Trials are currently open across specialty groups including cardiology endocrinology infectious diseases oncology paediatrics orthopaedics intensive care mental health gastroenterology anaesthetics and general surgery supported by a world-class clinical trials workforce.
The Adrian Costa Clinical Trials Centre is a key part of Barwon Healths strategy to embed research excellence into every aspect of clinical care. It provides an overarching system and infrastructure for clinical trial delivery at Barwon Health supporting and enabling investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored trials. The Centre aims to expand and diversify consumer access to the best available treatments increase workforce engagement training opportunities and research capacity and support the overall sustainability of clinical trials at Barwon Health.
