Position Title:Handyman Sheet Metal Shop
Location: Norfolk VA
Branch: Portsmouth
Department: Welding
Shift: ALL (MonFri 6:00 AM2:45 PM or 2:30 PM10:00 PM with a 45-minute lunch)
Security Clearance: Not Required
Pay Rate:$20 per hour
Position Summary
Hutco Inc. is seeking a Handyman to join our Sheet Metal Shop team in Norfolk VA. This is a critical support role that ensures optimal shop readiness and efficiency through tool handling setup cleanup and general task support. This position requires strong physical capabilities and the ability to follow verbal and written directions to contribute to the shops daily operations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Set up and break down work areas and equipment including assisting journeymen with hose runs and tool preparation.
- Operate basic power tools safely and effectively.
- Clean up workspaces and dispose of materials in compliance with safety and environmental standards.
- Retrieve deliver return and maintain care of tools and materials.
- Perform basic preventive maintenance on machinery and shop equipment (e.g. lubricate machines check fluid levels).
- Organize and maintain clean well-ordered stockrooms and material staging areas.
- Assist with tasks as directed by supervisors and senior tradespeople.
- Ensure full compliance with site safety protocols and WAF (Work Authorization Form) requirements.
- Maintain awareness of hazards and use the appropriate PPE for each task.
- Participate in site-specific evacuation procedures and emergency protocols.
- Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with team members.
- Navigate ship environments and understand compartment designations where necessary.
Qualifications & Skills
- Basic math skills and ability to follow written/verbal English instructions.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with hand tools and shop safety protocols.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Willingness to work varied shifts and overtime including weekends as required.
- Must be safety-conscious and demonstrate strong housekeeping habits.

- Frequent lifting/carrying of tools and parts (up to 50 lbs).

Reporting Structure
- Reports to: Sheet Metal Shop Foreman / General Foreman
Accountability
- Responsible for safely and efficiently supporting tradespeople in the Sheet Metal Shop.
- Must maintain quality control organization and a safe work environment at all times.
Additional Requirements
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Must be able to access Navy installations and other shipyards.
- Must be able to wear appropriate PPE and work evenings/weekends as needed.
- Travel:Up to 30% may be required.
