Description of Work

Internal Posting Only temporary or permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) employees in a temporary full-time temporary part-time permanent full-time permanent part-time probationary trainee or time-limited position or a layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act)may apply

Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance repair and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices operating a variety of hand and power tools clearing right of way repairing pavements assisting with pipe installation or other drainage tasks inventorying materials inspecting contract work and operation of heavy equipment. Work may require lifting to 50 lbs. repeatedly. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to Emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Additional Expectations:

Safety toe footwear is needed for this position. Employee must be able to operate medium dump truck safely. Skill in the safe use & care of assigned equipment hand & power tools & perform manual maintenance duties & other duties as directed by supervisor. Employee must have ability to act upon both verbal & written communication. Employee must have ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain. Employee must have ability to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Must be able to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check complete necessary training and orientation and be at least 21 years of age.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
