Introduction

DESCRIPTION




Under general supervision to maintain and repair County owned and operated drawbridges storm water lift stations and associated equipment and facilities including but not limited to mechanical systems electrical systems water discharge systems and building operations systems and to perform related duties as required.

Positions in this class function at the journey-level and are expected to work with minimal supervision. Reporting to a Bridge and Pump Supervisor incumbents in these positions must be able to perform assigned maintenance and repairs on moveable drawbridge spans and storm water lift stations and work safely under various working conditions. Employees in this class make decisions concerning the quality of the work performed; and make recommendations for necessary repairs equipment modifications and installation of projects.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



The equivalent of three years full-time experience in the class of Building Equipment Maintenance Worker or an equivalent or higher-level class in the Alameda County classified service (non-classified includes District Attorneys Office Hospital Authority and the Consolidated Courts) performing related work.
OR II

The equivalent of four years full-time experience in the operation maintenance repair and installation of heavy industrial electrical mechanical plumbing control systems engines and pumps.

License (required for all patterns): Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class C Drivers License. Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous three-year period.

Special Requirements:
Must have normal hearing and eyesight including depth perception and freedom from color and night blindness.
Must comply with County and Cal OSHA policies procedures and guidelines (such as Respiratory Protection).

Working Conditions:
Work in all weather around heavy traffic and large construction machinery.
Work underground and inside confined space areas.
Work in open steel structures at heights up to 180 feet and pit areas 40 feet below estuary level.
Subject to be on-call 24 hours in order to respond to emergency situations and must actively participate in the program. This will require being on standby duty.
Work around potentially hazardous movable working equipment.
Subject to climbing working from heights bending stooping and lifting of heavy objects.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:
Methods tools and equipment used in the skilled trades necessary for the maintenance and repair of all phases of bridge and storm water lift station equipment electrical installations and machinery.
Safety practices applicable to electrical and mechanical maintenance marine traffic and when performing work upon road and waterways.
Regulations governing the operation of drawbridges and storm water lift stations.
Regulations governing the operation of storm water lift stations.
Mechanical systems including engines gear drives pumps heat exchangers etc.
The operation of HVAC and control system.
Provisions of the National Electrical Code.
Plumbing systems and general plumbing repairs.
Electrical systems and general electrical system repairs.
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) maintenance troubleshooting and repair.
Cathodic protection systems.
Computer systems usage and common applications such as MS Outlook Word and Excel internet searches etc.

Ability to:
Learn the detailed operation of storm water lift stations and bridge machinery electrical systems and pertinent maintenance methods.
Read electrical and mechanical blueprints and schematics.
Respond and act quickly judiciously and independently in emergency situations; and work under minimal supervision.
Utilize and operate various machine and basic hand tools and equipment.
Climb stairs ladders and open structures; work in open steel structures at heights up to 180 feet and to 60 feet below the water level.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Diagnose and repair problems with storm water lift stations.
Perform welding brazing soldering and other general machine shop work
Fabricate using material such as sheet metal round stock angle and flat iron pipe and expanded metal screen.
Follow general and detailed verbal and written instructions.
Keep proper records pertaining to work schedules log and shift operations and inventory items.
Use basic computer software MS Office-Word Excel Outlook.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

  1. A review of the applicants application to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
  2. An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates final examination score. The oral interview may be administered virtually and/or contain situational exercises.

Candidates must attain a qualifying rating on each portion of this recruitment.
