PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The secondary science coordinator is responsible for working closely with teachers and administrators at secondary campuses (grades 6-12) to facilitate and utilize best practices to improve science proficiency and performance of all students. The secondary science coordinator will provide support consistent with the content state standards and language proficiency standards.

Education/Certification:
Masters Degree required
Masters Degree in Curriculum & Instruction or Science field preferred
Valid Texasteaching certificateinSecondary Science required
Texas Mid-Management Supervisors Certificate or Principals Certificate preferred
Special Knowledge and Skills:
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); utilize effective interpersonal skills; interpret data federal and state laws and policies; possess effective presentation skills; direct curriculum development process and program management; have computer skills; manage department budget and personnel
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience as a secondary science classroom teacher required
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Keep informed about current legislation educational developments literature and research in Science instruction by participating at state and national professional organizations; attend appropriate conferences and staff development sessions; disseminate information to schools.
- Coordinate the development and updating of science curriculum documents; monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the districts science program.
- Demonstrate effective teaching strategies for instructional improvement and provide appropriate and effective staff development.
- Prepare monitor and maintain required records reports bids and budgets for the science department.
- Purchase materials and resources for campus implementation aligned to the districts science curriculum and instructional program.
- Coordinate between the Instructional Materials department and campus administrators to ensure that that required instructional materials are available to staff throughout the school year.
- Provide leadership by meeting regularly with secondary science department chairpersons.
- Plan organize and/or conduct staff development sessions for teachers and/or administrators in the field of science.
- Conduct or provide required science safety training and updates to comply with the Texas Hazard Communications Act (updated 1993) for all secondary science teachers.
- Work with campus administrators teachers and department chairpersons to analyze and interpret state assessment data to develop instructional plans for further supporting increased student performance.
- Work with district and campus administrators and science staff in the upgrades of science facilities.
- Promote a positive working relationship with school and community partners by serving as the department liaison.
- Model updated effective and research based instructional strategies and test-taking strategies for teachers to implement with students in classrooms.
- Interpret federal and state rules and regulations regarding science education for district implementation.
- Evaluate science supplemental resources and consultants for alignment to state standards in grades 6-12.
- Visit campuses to evaluate and support campus needs; observe classroom teaching in order to assess program effectiveness.
- Keep the immediate supervisor informed regarding the status on all projects or initiatives and of directives or requests received internally or externally.
- Foster collaborative educational efforts among staff by supporting the districts philosophy and mission statement.
- Develop science district assessments that correlate to the alignment of state standards instructional targets and timelines as approved by the district assessment department and immediate supervisor.
- Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor (primary evaluator).

Minimum: $334.53
Maximum: $466.73
Note:Starting pay for a new hire in a pay range plan will be determined individually based on each persons job-related experience and salaries paid to peer employees in the same position with similar experience.
