Class Summary



Job Description
Animal Control Officer levels I and II are responsible for day-to-day activities associated with the enforcement of animal ordinances training and orientation to include both Kennel Operations and Enforcement Officer sections. After a structured training period Animal Control Officers will be trained in and assigned to either Kennel or Field Operations.


Animal Control Officer I Essential Duties
  • Monitoring and ensuring animals are in good health and the sanitization of their housing units.
  • Administering medication to animals and ensuring they are properly fed and hydrated.
  • Working with local authorities and senior officers responding to citizen complaints of stray vicious sick injured or diseased animals reported bite cases and information used to prosecute violators.
  • Assisting with the maintenance of animal medical and court records to include intake and adoption records and medical charts for court cases.
  • Maintaining logs on diseases medications and treatments as required by state and federal regulations.
  • Assisting in domestic animal and livestock cruelty and abandonment investigations.
  • Works closely with senior officers to gather information used to prosecute violators.
  • Assisting field officers with unloading intaking and relocating of animals.
  • Assisting in the adoption of animals as well as the public tours for lost or adoptable animals.
  • Assisting in euthanizing animals and other functions assigned to the euthanasia laboratory as well as the preparation and transportation of specimens to the state lab for testing.
Animal Control Officer II Essential Duties in addition to the above
  • Officers assigned to field operations may respond to citizen complaints of stray vicious sick injured or diseased animals. Work with local authorities on impound needs issuing citations and providing courtroom testimony.
  • Maintain various records on animals up to and including processing intakes and adoptions review and upkeep of medical charts and records and court cases as needed.
  • May investigate cruelty and abandonment of domestic animals and livestock. May be required to work with local authorities to prosecute violators.
  • Unload check in and relocate animals in the shelter. Conduct intake activities on animals.
  • Investigate reported bite cases. Conduct rabies quarantine checks and verify quarantine requirements are met. Decapitate prepare and transport specimens to the state lab for testing.
  • Euthanize animals and participate in other functions assigned to the euthanasia laboratory. Prepare daily records of euthanasia solution usage for the State Department of Agriculture.
  • Provide informational tours to schools and various community groups.
  • Ensure inventory supplies are stocked and up to date.

Public Speaking Duties
  • May assist with adoption
  • May assist with outreach events
Other Job Requirements/Information
  • This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing.
  • This job may require on-call rotation and emergency after hours weekends and/or holidays.
Effective 4/11/2023 this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.

Animal Control Officer I
The grade for this position is A12(3) with a salary range of $36633 - $41669. Salary will be dependent on education and experience.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above will also be considered.
  • Pre-exposure Rabies vaccine or current titer completed within 6 months of employment
  • Valid drivers license
Preferred Qualifications in addition to the above minimum qualifications
  • One year of animal control experience
  • Must be proficient in English communication
  • Ability to provide clear and professional verbal and written expression



Animal Control Officer II
The grade for this position is B21(3) with a salary range of $43238 - $49723. Salary will be dependent on education and experience.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED
  • One year of animal control experience
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above will also be considered.
  • Valid drivers license
  • Euthanasia Training
  • Asp Baton Certificate
  • Current Rabies Titer
  • Defensive Driving Certificate
  • Basic Chemical Capture Training
  • Crematory Training
Preferred Qualifications in addition to the above minimum qualifications
  • Must be proficient in English communication
  • Ability to provide clear and professional verbal and written expression
