About IESO
The Independent Electricity System Operator or IESO is a government agency in Ontario responsible for managing the provinces electricity system. It ensures that supply and demand for electricity are balanced in real time and that the power grid operates reliably and efficiently. The IESO also runs Ontarios electricity market where electricity is bought and sold and helps plan for the provinces long-term energy needs. This includes forecasting electricity demand acquiring new energy resources and integrating renewable energy and emerging technologies into the grid. The organization works with a wide range of stakeholders including utilities energy companies municipalities and Indigenous communities to support a reliable sustainable and affordable electricity system. The IESO is headquartered in Toronto and plays a key role in shaping Ontarios energy future.
Key Responsibilities
- The role involves developing and maintaining detailed power system models to support real-time grid operations planning studies and reliability assessments within Ontarios electricity market.
- Performing load flow short-circuit transient stability and contingency analyses using industry-standard simulation tools.
- Coordinate protection settings equipment sizing and ensure compliance with NERC NPCC and Ontario grid codes.
- Preparing technical reports and collaborating closely with operations planning market teams and external stakeholders.
- Contributes to ensuring the reliability and security of Ontarios electricity system through detailed simulation and analysis.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- A bachelors degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
- Around 4 to 6 years of professional experience in power system analysis modeling and simulation.
- Hands-on experience with industry-standard power system simulation software such as PSS/E ETAP PSCAD or DIgSILENT.
- Experience conducting studies like load flow short-circuit transient stability protection coordination and contingency analysis.
- Knowledge of North American electric grid standards including NERC and NPCC reliability criteria.
- Familiarity with Ontarios electricity market and grid operations is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical problem-solving and communication skills to produce reports and collaborate with multiple teams.
