Position: School Nurse (RN) - District Wide

SUMMARY:

The district-wide school nurse will be assigned to support all five schools in the district on a rotating general base schedule of one school per day. However due to the dynamic needs of the district the District-wide School Nurse will also be responsible for traveling between buildings as necessary to provide support for staff absences field trips health screenings other emergent needs.

The daily work hours will align with the regular school day schedule of the assigned building. Because each school may have slightly different start and end times the nurses shift will vary accordingly based on the school to which they are assigned on a given day. This schedule is flexible and subject to change based on the needs of the district. Flexibility and responsiveness are essential components of this role to ensure the health and safety of all students and staff across the district.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar related or a logical assignment to the position.

    • The school nurse is responsible for developing implementing and managing a school health program consistent with Massachusetts guidelines regulations and statutes governing nursing practice and school health and local district policies
    • Organizes and implements state-mandated programs such as immunization surveillance and health related screening programs including referral and follow-up.
    • Provides direct nursing care to meet the needs of the students including administering first aid care for injuries emergency medical care and management of acute and chronic illnesses.
    • Refers students to outside health care providers and/or other appropriate school staff for evaluation and follow up if indicated.
    • Administers and/or supervises the administration of prescription medication to students; provides medically prescribed intervention.
    • Develops student specific health care plans aimed at improving health and academic achievement in collaboration with parents/guardians and health care providers which include nursing diagnosis interventions and specific student goals.
    • Maintains comprehensive and updated school health records; utilizes Electronic Health Record to document student interactions and other health related information.
    • Serves as member of the care coordination team for students with special health needs; participates in school-based team meetings of students when medical input interpretation or consultation is needed.
    • Visits students homes and attends health care provider appointments with parental consent if needed upon request and approval.
    • Identifies need for health education; acts as resource in health promotion/health education and teaches basic principles of health promotion to students families and staff.
    • Participates in professional learning programs and workshops to enhance skills and knowledge.
    • Ability to travel from building to building as needed

Qualifications- Required:

  • Minimum of Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Massachusetts Board of Registration
  • DESE Licensed as a School Nurse
  • Experience working with children and adolescents in public school/agency/human services setting including students with special health and educational needs.
  • First Aid Certified
  • Successful completion of Criminal Records Check (CORI) and fingerprints

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Superintendent of Schools in conjunction with the HEA/HSC Collective Bargaining Agreement.
