General Summary
Under limited supervision assists in the development implementation and evaluation of a program of research in collaboration with nurses and other healthcare providers.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
- Mentors nurses and patient care services (PCS) staff to identify patient care problems and processes that can be addressed through nursing inquiry.
- Identifies and obtains best available assessment methods to evaluate target outcomes.
- Generates and facilitates the use of research evidence in guiding nursing practice.
- Provides consultation in research methods and data analysis to guide decision-making in the research program.
- Mentors nurses and PCS staff in developing data collection and management skills.
- Manages databases including data entry and cleaning.
- Performs descriptive and inferential statistics using statistical software packages to analyze data generated from nursing and PCS research and evidence-based practice projects.
- Assists in the development of research grant proposals.
- Reviews research proposals to ensure scientific merit.
- Collaborates with other nurse scientists internal and external to UMMC to coordinate research activities.
- Develops and maintains policies and standards within the research program that meet institutional review board regulatory requirements.
- Assists nurses and PCS staff in the dissemination of scholarly projects including the preparation of abstracts and manuscripts.
- Assists in the identification of learning needs of nurses and PCS staff in relation to nursing inquiry and develops educational activities for nursing and PCS staff.
- Active participant of the University of Maryland Baltimore Institutional Review Board.
- Develops and maintains a personal program of research.
- Makes scholarly presentations at regional and national levels.
- Participates in regional and national nursing research organizations
Patient Safety
Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital department or unit patient safety initiatives.
- Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety
- Reports adverse events and near misses to the appropriate management authority.
- Identifies possible risks in processes procedures devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
Qualifications :
Education and Experience
- A doctoral (PhD) degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing or Healthcare field is required.
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland or eligibility to practice due to Compact State agreements outlined through the Maryland Board of Nursing is required.
- Five years of hospital experience is required; nursing experience preferred.
- Eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Maryland School of Nursing.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Clinical and professional knowledge of current issues relevant to health care delivery and professional practice is required. Knowledge of regulatory requirements for the protection of human subjects research.
- Knowledge of clinical nursing research design methods database management and data analysis using statistical software packages is required.
- Ability to plan organize and follow through on projects with limited supervision.
- Demonstrated success in exhibiting teaching coaching and development skills.
- Demonstrated success in dissemination of research including scholarly presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
