Candidates who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Electrician 3 may be considered as an underfill in the Electrician 2 classification. An underfill must meet the minimum qualifications for the lower classification and would receive the pay in accordance with the lower classifications salary range until they meet the minimum qualification for the full position. At that time the successful candidate would be moved to the higher classification and salary range.
The salary range for the underfill is: $7051-$8917.
Preference may be given to candidates who can meet the full qualifications.
In this essential role you will be responsible for maintaining the safety reliability and operational readiness of our institutions electrical systems. This position performs skilled journey-level work involving the installation maintenance troubleshooting and repair of a wide variety of electrical equipment and infrastructure. Youll work on systems such as lighting power distribution motors control panels alarms and specialized facility equipment ensuring all electrical services meet security safety and operational standards.
Your day-to-day duties will include diagnosing electrical problems inspecting systems for hazards planning and laying out wiring and conduit installations and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints. You will maintain accurate records of repairs maintenance activities and materials used while assisting with the coordination of electrical projects and preventive maintenance schedules.
In addition to your technical responsibilities you will coordinate instruct and train skilled semiskilled and unskilled Adults in Custody (AICs) in the operation maintenance and repair of physical plant systems equipment and building structures within the correctional institution. You will provide on-the-job guidance to support skill development while ensuring work is performed safely and efficiently. This position also includes responsibility for oversight and review of electrical installations prior to final inspection by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) ensuring compliance with applicable codes and institutional standards.
By combining hands-on technical expertise with mentorship and quality control responsibilities this role plays a critical part in maintaining facility operations and supporting the rehabilitation and workforce readiness of AICs.
This position is represented by American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) as defined by statute.

Work is performed in a prison that houses maximum close medium and minimum-security Adults in Custody (AIC)s. The AICs have the potential for becoming angry hostile abusive and aggressive increasing the risk for employees of physical injury death and/or being taken hostage. There is an inherent responsibility to provide assistance through recall and/or reassignment during AIC unrest and other emergency situations occurring at the institution.
The work locations vary from new to old building structures there also may be towers walls service tunnels pipe chases electrical chases etc. All locations have multiple floors and tiered inmate housing which require the use of stairs. Walking to get to assigned work station or in the performance of work will be required this may be long distances.
Working conditions in service tunnels and pipe chases may include: poor ventilation high temperatures poor lighting conditions etc. Workers may be exposed to or work in inclement weather conditions which can include rain standing water snow ice etc. Some work may involve walking and working on uneven ground. When working on near or around storm drains and sewer systems the worker may be exposed to contaminants. When working on near or around heat exchangers steam piping and boilers there is a possibility of burns from hot pipes and exposure to boiler chemicals. Work may include frequent lifting and carrying of equipment (light medium and heavy). At times may work alone in small groups or in large groups of both employees and AICs depending upon operational needs. The use of hand tools powered hand tools stationary and portable power equipment painting equipment ladders platforms scaffolding power lifts etc. may be required.
At some locations work may include being near to and possibly working with asbestos and/or lead based paint. Workers will be required to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safety programs (Respiratory Protection Asbestos etc.) as dictated by the work and location.

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range to reflect an additional 6.95%.

The successful candidate for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access there may be some felony convictions that could disqualify you for this position.
