Job Description

Catholic Charities is one of the largest oldest and most comprehensive nonprofit human services organizations in Northern California annually reaching more than 32000 vulnerable individuals of all faiths in San Francisco San Mateo and Marin Counties. With a staff of approximately 450 reaching peaks of nearly 600 with seasonal hires an approximate annual budget of $60 million and a current governing board of 30 this venerable fully-accredited independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit addresses some of the most pressing community needs homelessness generational poverty immigration inequality hunger aging in isolation and communicable disease -- to name a few with compassion and services of the highest quality.

Salary: $140000-$150000 per year

Location: Onsite 5 days a week

JOB SUMMARY: We are seeking an experienced visionary and strategic leader to join our organization as Director of Philanthropy. The Director will play a critical role in advancing our mission through the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising strategy while managing a team of dedicated staff. This Director will be responsible for cultivating and stewarding relationships with major donors foundations corporations and other key stakeholders ensuring that the organization meets its revenue goals and deepens its impact. The Director of Philanthropy will be supervised by the COO and will work closely with the CEO Board of Directors and Administrative Council which is composed of senior leadership to align philanthropic efforts with organizational priorities.

  1. Philanthropic Strategy and Leadership:
    • Lead the development and implementation of a long-term philanthropic strategy that aligns with the organizations mission goals and priorities.
    • Oversee and manage all aspects of fundraising including major gifts grants corporate partnerships planned giving and annual giving.
    • Develop innovative strategies for donor engagement retention and stewardship to maximize philanthropic contributions.
  2. Major Gift and Donor Cultivation:
    • Identify cultivate and steward relationships with high-net-worth individuals foundations and corporate partners.
    • Personally manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects ensuring timely and effective outreach solicitation and stewardship.
    • Lead efforts to secure large gifts through direct solicitation events and partnerships.
  3. Fundraising Campaigns and Events:
    • Oversee the planning and execution of major fundraising campaigns and events.
    • Partner with the marketing and communications teams to design compelling campaign materials and strategies to increase donor engagement.
    • Ensure a seamless donor experience from initial contact to post-donation follow-up.
  4. Team Management and Development:
    • Lead mentor and build a high-performing philanthropy team setting clear goals and expectations.
    • Foster a culture of collaboration accountability and continuous learning within the fundraising team.
    • Ensure that fundraising efforts are data-driven and results-oriented with regular monitoring and reporting on progress.
  5. Board and Executive Collaboration:
    • Partner closely with the CEO and Board of Directors to engage them in the fundraising process and ensure that they are actively involved in donor cultivation and solicitation.
    • Provide regular updates to the board on fundraising goals achievements and challenges.
    • Support the development and execution of board-level fundraising initiatives and campaigns.
  6. Financial Management and Reporting:
    • Oversee the budgeting forecasting and financial reporting for the philanthropy department ensuring that fundraising goals are met within budgetary guidelines.
    • Develop and maintain metrics to track and measure the effectiveness of all fundraising activities.
    • Ensure compliance with all legal and ethical standards in fundraising activities.

Education

Bachelors degree required; masters degree or equivalent preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising with at least 5 years in a senior leadership or executive role.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and managing major fundraising campaigns and initiatives.
  • Expertise in donor relations major gift solicitation corporate partnerships and foundation fundraising.
  • Experience working with and supporting Boards of Directors in fundraising efforts.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Exceptional leadership strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with high-net-worth donors and key stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in fundraising software and donor management systems (e.g. Salesforce Raisers Edge).
  • High level of emotional intelligence and cultural competency.

The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for accurate and timely data entry that aids Performance and Quality Improvement (PQI) reporting financial management and reporting requirements.
