We work collaboratively with the Victorian State Government to ensure we fulfill regulatory requirements deliver State projects and safeguard customer data. The Victorian State Government retains sole responsibility for road access infrastructure and safety.

We are seeking a talented and driven individual to join our dynamic Technology Operations team. As a team member you will play a pivotal role in working with our business and helping to support and provide engineering services to the digital platform. About the Opportunity
The Senior Data Engineer will play a critical role in designing building and maintaining scalable and secure data pipelines and infrastructure that support VicRoads data platform. Reporting to the Manager Data Engineering & Platforms this role contributes to the delivery of high-quality governed and accessible data to enable analytics reporting and data product development across VicRoads. As a technical expert and hands-on contributor the Senior Data Engineer is responsible for implementing modern data engineering practices and mentoring junior engineers.
- Data Pipeline & Platform Enablement: Design and maintain scalable secure data pipelines to support analytics reporting and operational needs. Use modern data stack tools and cloud technologies to integrate diverse data sources and ensure resilient well-documented pipelines that enable seamless access for analytics and BI teams.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with data architects analysts and both technical and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver fit-for-purpose solutions. Translate business needs into clear technical specifications and data engineering outcomes that drive value and usability.
- Governance & Continuous Improvement: Implement data validation cleansing and monitoring processes to maintain high data quality across all solutions. Ensure compliance with data governance privacy and security standards while continuously identifying opportunities to improve data engineering tools processes and performance. Stay up to date with emerging technologies and recommend their adoption to enhance capability and efficiency..
- Technical Leadership: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior data engineers and cross-functional stakeholders fostering capability and collaboration across teams. Contribute to the development of engineering standards reusable components and best practices to support consistency and efficiency in data solution delivery.
About you
You are a skilled data engineering professional with a background in Computer Science Software Engineering or a related field and over five years experience building and maintaining modern data pipelines and platforms. Youre proficient in SQL and programming languages like Python or Spark and experienced with tools such as Databricks dbt Airflow and Kafka. Your work reflects a strong understanding of cloud-based data environments (e.g. AWS Redshift) data modelling ETL/ELT processes orchestration and automation.
You apply best practices in data governance security and quality and are committed to meeting privacy obligations and mitigating risks including fraud and corruption. Your technical work is matched by your collaborative approach you engage with stakeholders to understand their needs deliver aligned solutions and support the development of commercial data products. Familiarity with metadata management tools and knowledge of VicRoads systems would be an advantage.
