The Traffic Signal Superintendent is responsible for supervising and managing the day-to-day operations of traffic signal maintenance and installation crews across the Atlanta metropolitan area. This leadership role oversees the planning coordination and quality control of signal system operations ensuring compliance with local state (GDOT) and federal (MUTCD) regulations. Superintendent ensures timely response to signal outages and plays a critical role in infrastructure modernization projects such as adaptive signal systems and fiber integration.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise schedule and coordinate work activities for traffic signal technicians and contractors across multiple jurisdictions or service areas.
  • Oversee the maintenance repair installation and inspection of traffic signals flashing beacons pedestrian crosswalks and associated traffic control devices.
  • Ensure compliance with GDOT standards NEMA/ATC controller specs MUTCD guidelines and city/county ordinances.
  • Review and interpret signal plans blueprints traffic studies and timing sheets; implement or oversee signal timing adjustments.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of parts tools and signal system assets.
  • Track work orders maintenance logs and asset records using computerized systems (GIS asset management platforms).
  • Provide guidance on the implementation of advanced traffic management systems (ATMS) adaptive signal control (e.g. Centracs TACTICS) and connected vehicle technology.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA safety regulations and local traffic control safety standards.
  • Assist in budget preparation and oversee purchasing of materials and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 6 years of progressively responsible experience in traffic signal maintenance or construction with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience working in urban environments with complex signalized intersections.
Licenses & Certifications:
  • IMSA Level II Traffic Signal Technician certification required; Level III preferred.
  • IMSA Work Zone Safety certification required or obtainable within 6 months.
  • Valid Georgia drivers license required; CDL Class A or B preferred.
Preferred Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong understanding of traffic signal systems cabinet wiring detection systems (video radar loops) and signal controller.
  • Ability to lead field crews and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with Georgia DOT RTOP (Regional Traffic Operations Program) standards.
  • Experience with signal communication systems (fiber wireless ethernet) ATMS platforms and cloud-based monitoring tools.
  • Budgeting and procurement experience for signal infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting documentation and coordination with internal/external stakeholders.
Working Conditions:
  • Mix of field and office work; exposure to inclement weather and roadside traffic conditions.
  • Must be able to respond to after-hours emergencies including evenings weekends and holidays.
  • Occasional lifting of equipment up to 50 lbs; ability to operate bucket trucks or oversee crews working at heights.
