JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: School Counselor
Plans organizes coordinates and implements the districts counseling programs to effectively meet the needs of students in an educational environment. Specifically supports college and career readiness initiatives and efforts.
REPORTS TO: Principal
EXAMPLE (S) of WORK PERFORMED:
- Responsible for implementing the districts approved counseling curriculum in assigned building(s) and acts as a resource person for the infusion of guidance learning activities into the curricula.
- Guides individuals and groups of students through the development of educational and career plans.
- Assists and/or facilitates state assessments.
- Actively secures and provides resources for students related to college and career readiness.
- Counsels small groups and individual students through the development of educational and career plans and by providing and participating in orientations programs for students and parents.
- Consults with teachers staff and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students by conducting faculty in-service programs and parent education programs.
- Remains readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth self-understanding and maturity.
- Refers students and families to appropriate school and community resources such as school and/or community-based psychologists school nurses and administrators for educational and career assistance.
- Participates in coordinates and/or conducts activities which contribute to an effective school environment such as interpreting test results the establishment of grade level liaisons and being a student advocate.
- Uses the program evaluation self-study to regularly evaluate and recommend revisions to the districts counseling program.
- Pursues professional growth through postgraduate education attendance at local and state staff development programs and participation in professional organizations.
- Maintains and updates student records and when appropriate reviews with parents and teachers maintaining confidentiality.
- Actively participates in the Performance Based Guidance Evaluation.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (*)

- Professional staff assignment that requires daily attendance to meet student needs.
- Requires travel to work sites within a building.
- Interprets test results; reads published articles documents news releases etc. for information to use and/or pass on to others.
- Prepares and maintains written reports; develops information for written reports and correspondence to officials inside and outside the district.
- Guides independent study enrichment work and remedial work; discusses education programs with teachers administrators and/or citizens; reports testing information at meetings; conducts individual or group meetings; communicates with employees citizens suppliers etc. via telephone.
- Reviews published educational materials for selection purposes; visually obtains information from computer monitor.
Physical Demands (Strength)
- Exerts up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or
- Exerts a negligible amount of force frequently to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects.
NOTE: includes personal movement and sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Vocational Preparation: (Experience)
- Requires three years or more teaching and/or school counseling experience at the secondary level.
Education Preparation: (Formal and Informal)
- Requires Missouri certification in the area of Counseling
