We are seeking a Sr Payroll Specialist to join our payroll operations team with specialized expertise in California payroll compliance piece work calculations and prevailing wage administration. This position will be responsible for processing complex payroll scenarios while ensuring adherence to all California state and local employment regulations. This position can be worked from your home office.

The Role

  • Process weekly and bi-weekly payroll for California-based employees across multiple locations
  • Calculate and administer piece work payroll including rate determinations and productivity-based compensation
  • Manage prevailing wage payroll including certified payroll preparation and submission regulatory reporting and contractor compliance
  • Ensure compliance with California wage and hour laws overtime regulations meal/rest break requirements
  • Process and maintain accuracy of California-specific deductions: SDI PFL ETT SUI
  • Handle wage garnishments tax levies and child support orders per California requirements
  • Collaborate with department leadership and legal team on employment law changes and regulatory updates
  • Conduct payroll audits and resolve discrepancies for high-volume multi-location operations
  • Maintain payroll records in compliance with California recordkeeping requirements
  • Respond to wage verification requests
Requirements
  • 3 years progressive payroll processing experience
  • 2 years specific experience with California payroll compliance
  • Demonstrated experience processing piece work and prevailing wage payroll
  • Experience with certified payroll reporting
  • Proficient knowledge of California Labor Code and employment regulations
  • Working knowledge of Davis-Bacon Act and prevailing wage determinations
  • Knowledge of California Paid Sick Leave Act and local ordinance compliance
  • Advanced Excel skills for complex calculations and data analysis
  • Experience with HRIS/payroll software systems (Paylocity experience a plus)
  • Understanding of multi-state payroll processing
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Customer service orientation for employee inquiries
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Must provide a valid government-issued photo ID for verification; a drivers license is required if the role involves driving
  • Passing of all pre-employment requirements (MVR Background Check Drug Screen)
