Job Summary

The Pueblo West Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an energetic and passionate Youth Dance Instructor to lead our recreational dance program for children aged 412. This contracted position will teach fundamentals and basics of ballet tap and other dance variations in a fun supportive environment. Each class meets once per week for 4560 minutes over 810 weeks. The instructor may teach multiple classes per week depending on how age groups are divided and how many dance variations are offered (e.g. beginner ballet tap/jazz combo etc.). Classes are offered in Spring Summer and Fall sessions and held at Pueblo West High School or the Parks and Recreation facility.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Design and conduct weekly dance classes based on the general curriculum provided.
  • Teach fundamentals of ballet tap and other recreational dance styles (e.g. jazz hip-hop) appropriate to ages 412.
  • Lead structured warm-up and cool-down exercises to promote safety and flexibility.
  • Demonstrate and break down dance movements and techniques for students.
  • Develop and adapt lesson plans to meet varying skill levels and learning styles.
  • Provide positive reinforcement corrective feedback and encouragement to foster student confidence.
  • Monitor student progress maintain attendance records and report any concerns to the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Coordinate an optional end-of-session informal showcase or demonstration for family and friends.
  • Ensure a safe inclusive and enjoyable classroom environment at all times.
  • Maintain cleanliness and proper storage of any equipment or props.
  • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians regarding student progress class issues and session details.

Knowledge

  • Fundamentals of ballet tap and basic recreational dance techniques.
  • Child development principles for ages 412 and age-appropriate instructional methods.
  • Safety protocols for group dance instruction and physical activities.

Skills

  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to engage children parents and staff.
  • Ability to create clear age-appropriate lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to keep classes on schedule.
  • Creativity in teaching methods to maintain high energy and student interest.

Abilities

  • Demonstrate and physically perform dance movements throughout class.
  • Adapt teaching style to accommodate diverse learning needs and skill levels.
  • Work flexibly including occasional evenings or weekends to meet program schedules.
  • Comfortably instruct in both indoor studios and larger gym or multipurpose spaces.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education training and experience that provides the above knowledge abilities and skills may be substituted.)

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience teaching dance to children preferably ages 412.
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified (or obtain certification upon hire).
  • Preferred: Degree or certification in Dance Performing Arts or related field.
  • Must pass a background check.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a contracted position.
  • Each class is 4560 minutes once per week over 810 weeks.
  • Instructor may be scheduled to teach multiple classes per week depending on enrollment and age group/class variety.
  • Sessions are offered three times per year: Spring Summer and Fall.

Physical Demands

  • Must be physically capable of demonstrating and participating in dance.
  • Able to remain on feet for extended periods and assist young dancers.
  • May occasionally lift or move small equipment or props (up to 20 pounds).
