Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery improvement research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services.

About the Department

The Alfred Cardiology Department is a quaternary referral centre for specialist cardiology care. We run a large outpatient service across subspecialty areas including heart failure (general post transplant ventricular assist device) cardiac rhythm coronary structural valve lipidology and hypertension. We have five cardiac catheterisation laboratories multiple echo suites covering transthoracic stress and transoesophageal. We are a national leader in cardiac MRI and one of the largest cardiac CT services. We have an extensive research and education program for which we are known internationally.

About the Role

Applications are invited for the position of Advanced Heart Failure/Cardiac Transplant Cardiologist (Part Time) at Alfred Health.

The appointee(s) will;

  • Provide excellent clinical expertise and service in Heart Failure

Expertise in another sub-speciality interest is preferred e.g. advanced cardiac imaging.

The successful applicant(s) will join an existing team of 6 Advanced Heart Failure consultants. They will contribute to a week ON rotation to ward service. They will be expected to independently perform cardiac biopsy and right heart catherization. They will manage pre and post heart transplant patients as well as those with ventricular assist devices in clinic. They will also conduct a general heart failure and a specialist heart failure clinic (according to clinical/research interest). The successful candidate will hopeful take on a leadership role in the long term transplant clinic and well as our durable mechanical support clinic. There will be an expectation to contribute to our outpatient service in regional centres. There will be opportunities to be involved in teaching at the Alfred as well as both regionally and nationally.

Qualifications and Skills Required

Our preferred candidate must possess the following experience and attributes:

  • Be legally qualified practitioners registered or registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
  • Fellow of RACP
  • Fellowship training >1 year in Advanced Heart Failure
  • A PhD is desirable
  • An active interest in performing and leading research

General requirements

  • Meeting Alfred Health requirements for credentialing and scope of practice in Cardiology
  • Outstanding communication skills including well-developed conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to liaise well with other staff at all levels
  • Demonstrated flexibility in problem solving and the capability to develop and sustain highly collaborative relationships with others/ other teams
  • Provide supervision to junior medical and other relevant staff within the Unit/Department
  • Support Alfred Healths quality monitoring and improvement initiatives
  • Support Alfred Healths teaching research and clinical governance programs
  • Support the strategic priorities and values & beliefs of Alfred Health
