Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager Health Safety and Compliance the
Senior Lead Health and Safety
is responsible for supporting the development advancement and successful implementation of the Galore Creek Health and Safety (H&S) Program. This outstanding individual will foster safety leadership and the culture of safety across the Project and ensure that appropriate safety systems are in place as the Project progresses towards increased activity including engineering and environmental study drilling and early works construction activities.
The incumbent contributes as a key member of the Galore Creek project and site operations teams in planning budgeting and execution providing critical contributions to the Projects overall H&S performance.
Overview
The hybrid position will be project-site based during the operations season working shift rotations (2 weeks in and 2 weeks out) and preferably based out of the Smithers office for the remainder of the year (Vancouver based may also be considered). Travel is expected between Vancouver and Smithers and local communities as required. Applicants from other locations in Western Canada will be considered but Smithers is preferred.

Responsibilites
Be a courageous safety leader leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on common values of health safety environment and communities (HSEC) shared by the Partners (Teck and Newmont)
Provide professional oversight for direct reports (Health and Safety Leads Coordinators) contractors medical services contractors and Galore Creek Joint Health & Safety Committee
Work closely with the Manager Field Operations Superintendents and Supervisors in to ensure alignment with the Partners HSEC policies and standards
Ensure appropriate scope and scale implementation of H&S programs and tools with Project progression especially for future substantial early works construction activities
Contribute to the continuous improvement of H&S programs and tools driven by evaluation and statistical analysis of safety performance
Ensure full compliance with all applicable Health and Safety legal requirements
Supervise and report on safety statistics (leading and lagging indicators conditions incidences) to proactively implement safety improvement strategies
Maintain a fully operational Risk Register with ongoing review for newly identified hazards and implementation of critical control verifications
Ensure that the project provides appropriate training and maintains high quality training records for all site personnel including employees contractors and consultants

Degree or diploma in Health & Safety Science Engineering or related field is likely required although may not be required for candidates with outstanding proven experience. Advanced degrees in related fields or certification by an applicable Occupational Health and Safety professional body would be an advantage
5 to 10 years of dynamically senior level H&S experience with preference in mining mineral exploration construction and/or project management in operational environments. Experience with remote helicopter accessible environments would also be considered an asset
Drive to build new H&S programs including training and support Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Emergency Response Procedures etc.
Ability to craft and implement audit processes targeting high-risk activities to assess the sufficiency of existing critical controls
Experienced with incident investigation and able to analyze incidents to understand and recommend improved practices and procedures
Strong understanding of the principles of Safety Management Systems Hazard Identification Risk Assessment Risk Mitigation Critical Controls Hierarchy of Controls and use of Risk Registers and understanding of relevant legislative requirements
Ability to empower and encourage others support employees and ensure a safe healthy inclusive workforce
Industry awareness of equipment operations and maintenance drilling logistics aviation and heavy equipment management and maintenance sustainability environmental and material stewardship are assets
Proven track record to build positive relationships in a sophisticated environment with a diverse multidisciplinary team Indigenous Peoples and Communities of Interest (COIs)
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required including the ability to present information and write clear professional technical reports
