Description

The Financial Wellness Coordinator works to equip students with resources and knowledge they need to confidently manage finances while maintaining academic success. The Coordinator develops and provides financial wellness programming for new and continuing students who are under-resourced with specialized programming tailored for students supporting children/dependents. Programming includes workshops presented to groups of students organizing on-campus quarterly events and providing holistic individualized support. All financial wellness activities and programming are intended to be low barrier compassionate and non-judgmental. The Coordinator assists with the development and evaluation of a financial wellness hub and partners with staff providing basic needs programming and emergency financial assistance. The hub supports the success of students through a strengths-based approach including formal and informal supports and provides referral to campus and community resources.

Bellingham Technical College (BTC) is a premier higher education institution working to provide student-centered high quality professional technical education throughout Whatcom County and is the only technical college serving northwest Washington State. Bellingham rests in the scenic northwest corner of Washington State where the Cascade Mountains meet the Salish Sea. Bellingham Technical College invites applications for one full-time professional exempt grant-funded position as a Financial Wellness Coordinator. This position is not represented by a union and is at-will. It is Fair Labor Standards (FLSA) eligible for overtime. The position is funded from grant funds for approximately five years. Although it is expected to continue into the next fiscal year July 1 2025 grant funded positions are temporary dependent upon project funding and can end at any time funding is discontinued.

This position reports to the Executive Director of Student Financial Resources. It is expected to begin by September 1 2025. Position Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver financial wellness programming such as presentations one-on-one meetings with students and other events that are responsive to the needs of a diverse student population
  • Provide direct support to new students as follow-up to initial advising sessions that include timelines and identification of the next steps to secure funds
  • Provide students with referrals to services at BTC and from community partners that help students meet their financial needs
  • Assist with outreach to students who received emergency funding to connect them with long-term funding opportunities available from campus and community resources
  • Develop and send timely communication to ensure students are aware of dates and deadlines related to applying for and maintaining eligibility for financial resources
  • Assist students with completing applications and processes for funding such as financial aid applications (FAFSA/WASFA) and public benefits programs (Basic Food/SNAP child care housing)
  • Co-lead the development management and evaluation of an on-campus center supporting financial wellness programming
  • Collaborate with partner agencies such as the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) the Washington Employment Security Department WorkSource Washington and Opportunity Council in supporting financial resources childcare and employment opportunities
  • Support the development of new community partnerships to increase resources for students
  • Collaborate with campus departments to connect and coordinate student support programs including advising tutoring counseling and financial aid
  • Maintain accurate records prepare reports and track program outcomes and impact for evaluation purposes
  • Collaborate with staff from BTCs Institutional Planning & Assessment office to evaluate program outcomes and address strategies for continuous improvement
Additional work
  • Effectively utilize computerized systems and software including MS Office products PeopleSoft (ctcLink) Customer Relations Management systems
  • May require occasional travel within WA State for meetings
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Physical Work Environment:
Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods of time ability to work in an open office setting and to work with frequent in-person interaction and numerous interruptions; work under pressure handle multiple tasks and prioritize competing demands. This position requires some local and state travel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or higher from an accredited institution;
  • Relevant work experience providing support or guidance to individuals in educational nonprofit or social service setting;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with students/clients and collaborate with internal and external partners;
  • Skilled in preparing and delivering presentations or workshops with compelling content
  • Experience supporting or contributing to the development of programs or services
  • Ability to work independently and within a team managing multiple tasks and priorities effectively
OR
  • A combination of experience and training that provides the applicant with the knowledge and skills to perform the job will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in education counseling social work human services education or a related field;
  • Work experience with public benefits or funding programs such as Basic Food/SNAP Temporary Assistance for Needy Families housing assistance childcare financial aid etc.;
  • Experience collaborating with external community partners and maintaining effective working relationships in support of advancing needs of a program;
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws regulations and policies related to public benefits programs is an advantage.

Supplemental Information

Compensation Work Schedule and Benefits:
Salary is $5656 per month; $32.63 per hour.

Work schedule is generally Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A regular schedule will be finalized upon hire. Schedule may be hybrid with some in person and some remote work as arranged with supervisor. Candidate must be willing to work on-site for all or a portion of their schedule.

Leave eligibility use and cash-out is based on BTC Policy 525.2. Although considered temporary for leave purposes only this position is designated as Regular and will be provided under the following criterial: This position will receive 8 hours per month of sick leave 16 hours per month of vacation leave 3 personal leave days (24 hours) and paid state/college holidays. Vacation is eligible for cash-out at the end of the assignment. Benefits also include a Washington State insurance package including medical dental vision life insurance and long-term disability; a retirement benefits package with choice between the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) Plan 3 or the State Board Retirement Plan (SBRP) 401A plan TIAA. Additional optional benefits include ability to participate in a medical Flexible Spending plan Limited Purpose Flexible Spending plan or Health Savings Account; Dependent Care Assistance; discounts for automobile and homeowner insurance; two voluntary investment (not matched) programs - TIAA (403b) or the State Deferred Compensation (457) plan. Employee Assistance Program (EAP); up to 21 days of military leave; up to 5 days of paid bereavement leave paid civil/jury duty ability to participate in a shared leave program; up to 2 days of unpaid holiday for reasons of faith or conscience. Based on regular designation this position is eligible for Washington State and BTC Tuition Waiver programs.
