  • Salary: The starting salary for this position is $18.00-$22.00/hour DOE.

Schedule

  • 40 hours/week Flexible Will include weekends and evenings as needed for Culinary Arts events.

Training

  • Orientation: Alternatives provides thorough orientation and training for all new staff. You can expect a one-week orientation where you will learn all about Alternatives and be prepared for your role. This first week is scheduled from 9 AM to 5 PM at our Alternatives Training Center.

To be a successful Culinary Arts Program Instructor you will need the following skills and qualifications:

An in-depth knowledge of teaching methods and an educational background is needed. Supervisory experience is preferred.
It is imperative to have strong boundaries with residents and CAP students.

Must Haves:

  • Associates degree and at least 2 years of experience in education or training.
  • Valid drivers license.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency (MS Office).
  • Ability to pass a physical and work in a correctional kitchen environment.

Preferred:

  • Bachelors degree in Culinary Arts or Behavioral Sciences.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with offender populations.
  • SERV Safe Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months).

What Will You Do in This Position

The Culinary Arts Program (CAP) Instructor is responsible for delivering educational instruction to offenders in a structured culinary arts program. This role combines classroom teaching hands-on kitchen training and coordination with the Chef and Food Services Department to prepare participants for employment in the food service industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach a minimum of 15 hours per week in classroom and kitchen settings.
  • Demonstrate culinary techniques and supervise practical applications.
  • Track and report student progress behavior and performance.
  • Coordinate with the Chef on scheduling events and participant activities.
  • Supervise participants both on-site and during off-campus activities.
  • Assist with food preparation and kitchen operations as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and supervision protocols.
  • Maintain communication with the Department of Labor regarding pre-apprenticeship standards.
  • Attend staff meetings and contribute to program development.

  • Increased Accrual with Tenure: Accrual rates increase at 3 years 5 years and every subsequent 5-year mark up to 25 years.
  • Pro Rata Basis: Accrual rates for employees working 20-30 hours per week are on a pro rata basis.
