Job Purpose:

The WasteAssessment Specialistprovides technical reviews and issues guidance for waste characterization request pertaining to Hazardous and Solid Waste issues. You will be responsible for review and comment on waste characterization reports assist senior section staff with environmental sampling in the RCRA CERCLA Solid Waste and Criminal Investigation programs as needed. Further this position will coordinate vehicle assignment and inventory for BLWM staff. You will also provide support to the BLWM Emergency and Nuclear Response programs as required.

Job Duties:
  • Under general supervision review and maintain a working knowledge of Waste Assessment Section SOPs and policies. Work with section staff to update and/or develop accurate procedural documentation for the Section activities; Review EPA SW-846 test methods for changes and updates inform all interested parties of updates and changes.
  • Under general supervision review and maintain a working knowledge of the SC Solid Waste and Hazardous Waste Regulations especially with respect to waste determinations and characterizations; Must be able to review technical data and prepare reports for proper management of industrial waste.
  • Serve as vehicle coordinator for the BLWM.
  • Work with senior section staff to become proficient with field screening equipment as established by the SOPs; Serve on SCDES Drone Team and provide drone pilot services to the agency.
  • Assist senior section staff with environmental sampling and field screening for BLWM programs as required.
  • Cross train participate in rehearsals and drills with BLWM Nuclear Response programs as required.
  • Perform all other duties as directed the Section Manager.



Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • An associate degree in a related technical field;
  • OR a high school diploma and two (2) years of environmental health or related experience. Certification in the environmental field qualifies as related experience.
Note: Degrees in a related technical field include but are not limited to Earth sciences chemistry biology physics soil science environmental science mathematics etc.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Additional Requirements:
  • Must have a working knowledge of personal computers and peripheral equipment.
  • Must have a fundamental knowledge in the principles of chemistry mathematics and statistics with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret technical environmental data and draft reports as they relate to the regulations.
  • Must possess good planning organizational and customer service skills.
  • Ability to effectively use environmental field screening instruments and equipment and computer systems and programs.
  • Must be able to pass an annual physical and be capable of working in PPE levels A thru D.
  • Must have a valid SC drivers license.
  • May require:
    • Daily travel throughout the state.
    • Occasional overnight travel and/or weekend work.
    • Extended workday schedules may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with environmental sampling and field screening equipment / instrumentation
  • Fundamental knowledge in principles of chemistry mathematics and statistics
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification
