Job Description
Job Title: Student Support Specialist Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Department/Location: St John the Evangelist School / Tucson AZ

Primary Function: Under the direction of the School Principal the Student Support Specialist (SSS) is responsible for providing holistic support to students by coordinating academic and behavioral interventions supporting social-emotional needs and offering pastoral care in alignment with the Catholic identity of the school. The SSS works closely with teachers families the dean of students and the principal pastor to ensure all students are supported in their academic emotional and spiritual Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching both academically and behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received. (Eph. 4:1)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of this Ministerial Position:
  • Recognize and support the unique Catholic Mission of the School by speaking acting counseling and instructing consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Support Specialist may not espouse in word or deed any doctrine inconsistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Give evidence of living Gospel values by being an active member of a faith communityand being open to the importance of a personal faith journey; strive to model theteaching of Jesus by attitude and example.
  • Help build the Schools faith community by a demonstrated willingness to participate inand help plan School religious and service activities.
  • Offer spiritual support by praying with students parents or staff members in need fostering a compassionate and faith-centered school environment.
  • Sets an example for students by personal adherence to Catholic Doctrine and Catholicprinciples of morality.
  • Monitor and supervise student activities as appropriate.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned
Academic Support & Student Services Coordination:
  • Support the implementation and tracking of Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention plans.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers instructional coaches Dean of Students and families to monitor student progress.
  • Maintain organized records of interventions assessments and support plans.
  • Support families in the referral process for additional services when necessary including outside counseling or psychological evaluation.
Social-Emotional & Behavioral Support:
  • Provide short-term non-clinical support for students experiencing emotional or behavioral difficulties.
  • Partner with the dean of students to address students mental health needs and support re-entry after crises.
  • Coordinate with the dean of students to offer support to students involved in discipline issues.
  • Implement proactive student success strategies such as check-ins/check-outs peer mentoring and SEL curriculum support.
Pastoral & Spiritual Support:
  • Offer a faith-based approach to student support modeling Gospel values of compassion mercy and dignity.
  • Provide a safe and confidential space for students to discuss personal struggles.
  • Participate in faith formation activities such as retreats student prayer groups and service projects.
  • Support students in understanding how to respond to challenges with Christian hope and resilience.
Collaboration & Communication:
  • Work as a liaison between school and families to support student success.
  • Collaborate regularly with the principal counselor dean of students and teachers.
  • Attend Student Support Team (SST) meetings and contribute to MTSS efforts.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with families regarding student needs and progress.
Basic Qualifications:
  • A working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of fostering lay leadership in the Catholic Church. If a baptized Catholic must be a practicing Roman Catholic in full Communion with the Church
  • Excellent communications skills including written verbal public speaking and presentation skills
  • Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills; must be a self-starter and be well-organized; must be a team player
  • Be available for evening and weekend work as necessary; have reliable transportation
  • Be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Proficiency in the use of computer technology including word processing and the use of excel and related technology; ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Flexibility in assessing needs and strategies and adapt appropriately in a ministerialenvironment
  • The ability to successfully complete a criminal history and background check
  • Professional bearing and clean and neat personal appearance
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors degree in education psychology social work or related field (Masters preferred).
  • Experience working with children in an educational or counseling capacity.
  • Knowledge of academic and behavioral intervention strategies and social-emotional learning.
  • Practicing Catholic preferred; strong understanding of Catholic values and the ability to integrate them into student support.
  • Excellent communication organization and interpersonal skills.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Physical and Other Requirements:
  • Ability to move around campus and interact with students in various settings.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with diocesan safe environment policies.
  • Participate in ongoing professional and spiritual development.
Other:
  • Bilingual preferred (English-Spanish); ability to read and write proficiently
